sippy cup issues

GandTiceandaslice · 12/01/2011 10:37

DS is 21 months old.
He's never got to grips with drinking from a sippy cup. I've got all sorts of cups/teats.
He'll happily drink water from a bottle but he has to stop this. So now we are using a Noby cup with a soft teat & going from there. The teat is sippy cup shaped but soft.
He still has milk from a bottle morning & night.
Also, he will not feed himself his water/milk.
He is BLW so feeds himself quite happily messily
I can't understand why he won't drink by himself. He's given enough opportunity to try & do it himself!

Have you tried a Doidy cup? Under supervision obviously.

GandTiceandaslice · 12/01/2011 17:58

I saw one of those in Waitrose the other week.

I'll pick one up. They look weird, make me feel drunk looks wistful

Thank you.

Ha! I second the wistful feeling Grin

They are very easy to knock over though. DS knocked his today and spilled milk all over the table and floor.

Mine's like this (15mo). Still fannying about with the sippy cup! Agree with Quenelle - he's quite good at drinking from my glass, so maybe skip a stage and go straight to open cups, starting with Doidy

All these bloody sippy cups leak as well. Gah.

Thank you for the replies.

He still won't feed himself drink though. Hmm

Have you tried a straw? Both mine loved a straw from 6 months on. Obviously you need to supervise/hold it for them. You might find it makes it an easier transition to a sippy cup.

GandTiceandaslice · 15/01/2011 13:37

He won't use a farking straw.
This is my only issue with him. Well that & him taking all the dvd's off the shelves!!! Grin
I bought yet another cup today. It doesn't leak!
It's a babies sports cup thing. It has a hard sippy area.
He still won't do it himself though.
He eats fruit without me peeling it. All his food by himself. But he will not drink water/milk by himself.
Bizarre!

that's the sort of age I was getting mine off sippy cups - can you not just move him straight onto normal ones?

maxybrown · 15/01/2011 18:22

Be careful with the leak proof ones - have you tried to drink form one?!! They will require him to suck more than on a bottle.

Will he take drink say from your glass/cup if you are having a drink?

No useful advice really, but just wanted to say my dd is similar in that she will only drink milk out of a bottle (or a breast). We're not too worried as when the milk is dropped, this will also be dropped, but we did try various cups with her at one point to see if she would accept them. She's fine with her tommee tippee for water, although she can't get much out, but she doesn't like: straws (she blows), open cups, the doidy cup or non spill tippee cups Hmm

However every evening she nearly chokes on the bath water as she glugs it (complete with bubbles) out of her stacking cups - babies and children are odd!

Bumbleconfusus · 15/01/2011 21:39

I'm really struggling getting DD off a bottle as well. She will occasionally drink from a sippy cup but then immediately starts shaking it up and down and spilling it everywhere - I don't even try with a cup without a lid. She does however drink from DH's water bottle quite well, but I don't know how acceptable that is...

GandTiceandaslice · 16/01/2011 10:15

He loves drinking from our glass.
I shall get to waitrose this week & buy him that doidy cup then.

They are hard to drink from which is why I think it's strange that you are advised to give a child a cup from 6 months.

None of mine could manage a cup at 6 months, they weren't able to suck hard enough!
