Help??? Isn't that good?

spikeycat · 02/09/2003 10:17

my 8 month old did that at the beginning of 8 months, the solution - lower the cot

And get ready for pulling themselves to standing and then falling over - lots.

I already have to buy a stair gate as he is climbing up two stairs now!

badjelly · 02/09/2003 12:13

Thomcat - of course it's good but she could have waited a couple of weeks 'till we got back of hols! Oh well so much for a relaxing break!

What timing hey! oh well, have a fab hoilday and that's great news about your clever little girl.

rainbow · 02/09/2003 12:15

I wish. My ds3 is 10.5mo and stays were I put him, lazy toad.

ThomCat · 02/09/2003 12:24

Rainbow - mine is 19 months and just moves round in a circle! No moving backwards, forwards or standing of any description! The minute we get it thought we'll spend a lot of time thinking back to the days when it was all so easy and they stayed where you put them!

spikeycat · 02/09/2003 12:26

believe me, you wish for them to get on the move then spend the days with your hearth in your mouth most of the time

easy · 02/09/2003 13:18

Actually I've discovered that I spent the last 4 years thinking "when he can / can't do such and such, it'll get easier".

Everytime they learn something new it introduces new problems. But you still feel immensely Proud.

Gilli · 03/09/2003 22:29

Thomcat - reassure me please.... my No4 is 16 months and bottom shuffling but refuses to weight bear or stand AT ALL - was just beginning to panic slightly as other 3 were all earlier, but are you saying you have one too? DD is 88cms tall so that may be the problem!

ThomCat · 04/09/2003 11:30

Gilli - I can totally reassure you - I have been told by 3, or 4, specialists / physiotherapists etc that if they bottom shuffle they'll be late walkers. The head honcho at the hospital said that all the children she's seen who decided to shuffle instead of crawl were all late walkers and didn't crawl at all.
However if you feel you want you mind put to rest, and who would blame you, get DD checked out but I'll bet my bottom dollar I'm right.
PS MY DD has Down's that's part of the problem, but was told even if she didn't have she's just the bottom-shuffling sort!
TC xx

wickedstepmother · 04/09/2003 11:37

That's funny TC, I've had 2 crawlers and a bum-shuffler. The 1st crawler walked at 15 months and we are still waiting for 13 mo crawler no2 to take a step, whereas 'bumshuffler' was walking confidently at 11 months ! I thought it would be other way around as the crawlers tend to be much quicker and more efficient at getting around than the shufflers IME, and so are happier to stick to crawling for longer whereas the shufflers get frustrated and get on their feet quicker.

kid · 04/09/2003 12:13

Gilli- I can reassure you as my DD started to bottom shuffle at 12 months. She couldn't/wouldn't take any weight on her legs. She started walking around the furniture at 18 months and took her first steps at 21months (+3 days!)
Within 2 months she was walking everywhere. She is now 4.5 and can do everything all the other kids in her class can do. She is also very small. She is about 98cms and has quite small feet too (7).
I did get her hips checked (just before she did start walking) but they were fine so we just sat back and waited until she was ready!
Hope DD doesn't make you wait too long, but enjoy it while you can!

ThomCat · 04/09/2003 13:58

Oh well WSM - show what the preofessional know!

Bumblelion · 04/09/2003 14:09

Gilli - I can also reassure you. My eldest DD walked at 11 months, my son walked at 15 months and at 18 months my youngest DD was only bum shuffling. She started walking around furniture in January (15 months) and didn't start crawling until about 16 months. She walked at 20 months so rest assured your little one will get there eventually.

jmb1964 · 04/09/2003 23:04

Gilli - I have a no4 (ds2, 17 months tomorrow) who's still only bottom shuffling too - perhaps it's because there's so much entertainment around? He is actually cruising around the furniture now, and has also taken to crawling a bit, so I guess he'll get there in the end! A friend has 7 month twins, and it looks as if the boy will walk pretty soon, he's already crawling - bit embarrassing when our ds2 is about three times his size !

Paula71 · 06/09/2003 22:20

Just wait until she hauls herself over the bars! My twin ds (now aged 20 months) both can get out of their respective cot beds and had the presence of mind to put their duvets on the ground before attempting it.

GillW · 07/09/2003 21:19

Standing in the cot is only the start of it - just wait until they're climbing out We had the "up and over" routine at only just over a year (must be heriditary because apparently I could vault out of a cot too at about 13 months) - and of course once they can climb out of a cot (even in a grobag/sleeping bag) they can do the same with a stairgate.... and sleeping bags make good toboggans on stairs..... Might be worth checking with the grandparents at what age you and DH/DP could escape from a cot.

Gilli · 08/09/2003 22:39

Thanks everyone - I guess I only worry because of the weightbearing thing - it just seems so late. Kid - I meant she's very tall for her age (just off the scale) and so I'm wondering if that is delaying things. The other odd thing she does (by comparison with my other 3) is that she can open both her legs out at right angles to her body (!) and judging by how flexible her legs are, may be double jointed in the hips IYSWIM
