Advice about night terrors

My friend has a 20 month old and he is waking up several times a night with what seems to be night terrors (can't be comforted by parents). She's knackered as she's also got a 4 month old. Anyone have any advice on how to deal with it? Or do they just grow out of it?

Hi Em2, I would suggest maybe a night light? LO may be surfacing from a dream and can't orientate themselves.

We had problems with DS when he would appear to be awake and almost hysterical crying, but he was actually still mostly asleep so we used to have to walk round with lights on and talking in normal/loud voices to get him properly awake and then once he was he'd calm down and usually ask to go back to bed.

Take care and hope they find a solution soon.

This is going on with our ds2 atm too - he's also 20months. He appears to be awake, but just sobs and sobs and seems so distressed and can't be comforted. We put the light on and talk to him to try and rouse him a little so he can settle normally again. These 'sessions' can last just a few moments, but the last one went on for about 20minutes! We also thought it was possibly night terrors.

Em23 - My ds did this around that age. It was really upsetting as he honestly looked terrified! And there was no consoling him. The episodes just stopped all by themselves..... but we had him sleeping in bed beside us which helped.

It is just a phase (doesn't help though when you don't know how long the phase is!).
