Potty traing - OK what dod I do now

ds1 2.5yrs is obsessed with the contents of his nappies and makes me change him when he is wet. We have introduced the potty but he has only done a wee in it once - in the bath!

Not sure how on move things on really - he attends nursery three days a week and their philosophy seems to be to have them all running around in pants weeing on the floor - not sure I fancy that!!

I am having the same trouble. DS is 3 at the end of Sept and starts preschool on 2nd Oct. Fantastic when naked from the waist down but not with pants. Saturday I bit the bullet and put him in pants. He was dry for about an hour and a half, then came to me holding his willy so I took the pants down (and he took them right off), he done a wee in the potty then we put the pants back on. A start, I think? But what do I do now? Do I keep on with pants then progress to trousers? Poos are a major issue too. Only in a nappy.

Why aren't kids born with a handbook specifically to their specification????!!!!!

Hughsie · 08/09/2003 13:11

He is in pants and trousers (old ones) now and has made be take them off to do a wee but know he is more likely to have an accident while dressed - it has to happen until they learn I suppose. No poo yet today so we will see

Lovely topic

HURRAH! Dh just rang and said ds came in from outside and said "I pooed" so he assumed he meant his pants, but no, dh took his pants down, expecting a little bit, but there was nothing. He sat ds on the potty and he did it!!!!

Hughsie · 08/09/2003 20:14

FANTASTIC - I know it is grim but I was so excited to see poo in our potty!

More excitement this morning - he asked for the potty at 7am and his nappy from the night was dry!

Excellent! We have had more success with pants, although he doesn't seem to understand they need to be taken down and up by HIM yet, he just jumps around squealing until we realise he needs a wee!

This weekend is going to be cold turkey, no nappies except bedtime. dh is a SAHD and doesn't have quite enough patience so I'm going for it Saturday, wish me luck!

Hughsie · 09/09/2003 14:46

dcolagirl - I wish you loads of luck my ds is exactly the same as yours by the sound of it as he has not mastered taking his pants off at all - he has sat in them a few times and when he does try to take them off he grabs the front with his willy too and tries to pull them away - ouch! He is in nursery tomorrow so I'm hoping they will help to crack it.

it is such a huge step isn't it

Lots of cyber support coming your way - come on boys you can do it!!

Hughsie - this looks like the right direction- persevere and in 1 week max it's craked - if it helps DS and DD were both dry at night at the same time as day....

Hughsie · 10/09/2003 10:28

Thanks for the encouragement pupuce. He is still doing well but his night time nappy was wet this morning but not much and he still asked for the potty straight away. I think he uses it as an excuse to stop what he is doing. he asked for it half way through tea last night then refused to go back and eat and he obviously knows I'll come and get him out of his cot if he asks for it from there - he's not daft so I imagine he'll get his own way most of the time!!

He is in nursery today where they faviour using the loo - I've sent loads of spare clothes for him and feel terrible not being with him today. he is grwoing up now and I suppose I dont want to let go.

My son started wearing Big Boy Pants about 2 weeks ago he's mastered getting to the potty for a wee but alas still goes for a poo in his pants. I thought they usually get the pooh thing sussed first...anyone else experienced it this way round. I know it's still REALLY early days.

dcolagirl · 10/09/2003 14:56

My ds is far better with wees than poos. How old is your ds MRSF?

We are buying Bob the Builder stickers tonight and doing a star chart. 1 wee (in potty or toilet) = 1 star sticker, 1 poo = 2 stickers and 10 stars = Bob the Builder cake. If this works, after a week I will 'run out' of cakes and say if he gets 10 stars everyday (he does wee a LOT so it would be easy) for a week, I will buy him a toy (for a couple of quid).

MRSF · 10/09/2003 15:04

That's a relief - not just me then. He's 21/2. Yes we've been doing a star chart. Although not as organised as yours ! Just a sticker on the fridge after anything in the potty. Maybe I'll do the toy thing at the end of the week. He's so good with the wee's I'm sure he'll get it soon.
Have you progressed to toilets yet ?

pupuce · 10/09/2003 17:39

How did it go today Hughsie ?
I think your DS is on the right track... a small wee in nappy in the AM does show he is controlling his bladder!

Hughsie · 10/09/2003 20:18

HE apparently had no accidents at nursery! I didn't collect him so didn't have chance to grill the girls about his every move but since been at home he has done 4 wees and a poo all in his potty - BUT we do have to charge over and remind him to take his pants off! - just in time in most cases.

I am so proud and felt really emotional about leaving him at nursery today as they told me that they all use the loo and ds has not done this at home yet - I shall hopeflly talk to them tomorrow about how he was as I'm sure when seeing the other children he will want to copy.

Nearly there - brilliant !
Well done Hughsie's little boy !

jodee · 10/09/2003 20:50

Hughsie, it brings a lump to your throat, doesn't it! I know I shall feel overwhelmed when ds starts nursery on 1st October. It's like they are growing up so fast and getting so independent - I know it's what we want but a little bit of me is sad that they don't need Mummy quite so much.
Your ds is coming on a storm - it's only been a few weeks that my ds has used the toilet for poos and tonight I couldn't get him off it, he was having such a great time counting his poos!

Hughsie · 10/09/2003 22:02

Thanks all - I do feel that it is great but feel teh pangs of wanting him to stay little and dependant but he looks so lovely holding his little willy in the potty and so full of pride when he produces the tiniest little trickle.

Thanks for being supportive to a soppy mum!

Oh just have another baby hughsie

dcolagirl · 10/09/2003 23:05

DS did a poo on the big toilet yesterday but kept saying "oh dear oh dear" because he thought he shouldn't. Congrats Hughsie, sounds like you are 90% there!

Hughsie · 11/09/2003 07:55

Another dry night - SO PROUD

dcolagirl - congrats to you that is great - I cant imagine ds1 on the loo yet!
pupuce - ds2 is 6 months so I can indulge my little baby needs on him - I am trying to stop him moving about as I want him to stay little.....joke

pupuce · 11/09/2003 16:57

Well done Hughsie - how was today ?

hughsie · 11/09/2003 18:21

Bit confused pupuce as it was a differnet girl looking after him today and they said he hasd two accidents but did not expand on what happened so I imagine he forgot to take his pants off first. But since being at home he has successfully pooed and done two wees on the potty so I think he may just need more support at nursery - I'm a bit annoyed actually as I think continuity of care would be a benefit at the moment so I'll phone them tomorrow.

hughsie · 12/09/2003 13:26

Spoke to teh carers today when I dropped him off - and tehy said he didn't tell them in time yesterday. cant wait to have hiom at home this weekend so we can encourage him again - they assured me that the staff changes will settle down soon and they did say he was doing very well considering the new faces and change of rom as well as potty training so musn't grumble.

Accident free day - think it may be cracked ! Shouldn't speak too soon I suppose
