Question about hearing

I'm a little concerned about ds. He's 3 1/2 months old. When i clap my hands right next to his ear (when he is looking the other way so can't see), should he be blinking or at least acknowledging it??

I didn't even think about it, until my nan did it to him the other day and made a point of telling me it was strange, so i tried myself, and he doesn't do anything. Is this normal?

I would get it checked out PDQ, did your baby not have a hearing test at 6 weeks ??

Hello newmumhelp

What about other responses to noise? Does he look round when he hears your voice? Or stop to listen to a musical toy?

I guess the only way to find out for sure is to see your health visitor and/or GP. Good luck

When he had his 6 week check, the doctor clicked his fingers, and he blinked. BUT he did it right in front of him, so i'm not sure if he blinked because he heard it, or if he blinked at movement.

I shouted right down his ear earlier (probably nasty thing to do), and he blinked. And have just done it a few times, and he blinked. But never with clapping, and if you call him or talk to him he doesn't normally acknowledge you

not sure if i would take blinking as a reaction cos they tend to do that anyway.

have you tried jangling keys? what about if you or his dad come in the house and he hears the door go and then you shout hello? i think they tend to look for whether or not they turn their head towards noises. i would call hv and arrange a test

hoxtonchick · 02/10/2005 19:33

my dd is 13 weeks, & has reacted to noises practically since birth. if i were you i think i would make an appointment with your gp (dd didn't have a hearing test at her 6 week check either).

newmumhelp · 02/10/2005 19:35

Dp thinks he's fine, but i have to admit, i'm more than a little worried. But saying that though, when we were on holiday, he was just drifting off to sleep when a car full of kids came past shouting, and he started crying like it had scared him. And my mum was rustling a nappy bag and he laughed at it. Could just be coincidence i suppose

Am i best to speak to hv do you think? They are pretty useless most the time

you will get used to worrying, that is your job from now on

if he sometimes reacts to noise, that is good, they dont do it all the time (mine never did it at hearing tests but were fine, just awkward). do contact hv. she might be useless but is the first step to getting referred to less useless specialists (hopefully less useless!)

newmumhelp · 02/10/2005 20:13

Thanks for the help. Will contact hv tomorrow and see what she says

Nope...no tests apart from at doctors as i said. Think i'm worrying for nothing really. As dp just pointed out to me, if i go in his room while he's asleep and make noise he wakes up. And on week days dp runs a bath at about 7am and thats what time he wakes up....however, on weekends, when dp doesn't get up early, he sleeps about half an hour to fourty five minutes longer. So i just wonder if the noise wakes him up in the week.

I'm starting to question it all now. Confused!! Think i should speak to hv just to sure!! This parenthood business isn't half a worry!!!

The other night i woke at 3am, and then lay there for 3 hours worrying about ds. Not worrying about anything in particular. All good fun hey
