Hi my ds has a severe speech delay - 6 words (mama, eyax(Alex brother) yes, no, woof woof, wow) can say vowel sounds and some constanants but can't link them. Understanding been assessed as 5-6yrs. Very keen to communicate with Makaton (will string 3signs together so understands about sentances etc) No other problems apart from epilepsy (controlled).

Basically just wondering what the future holds for wee man cos I'm just starting down the line of getting him statemented before he starts school in Sept and have managed to get myself into a really dark place re his future. Sorry if I sound like I'm feeling sorry for myself but I'm just scared for my ds:(

Lady - have no idea how long the potty training will take - am trying to be relaxed about it all...but I am not naturally a laid back person Shock. I had to laugh at the nursery worker the other day, when I mentioned that I was planning to potty train ds - she said "well he needs to see you going to the toilet" as if we have an privacy!

I do feel guilty about the long days ds does as nursery (there that's where I blame myself!)...especially as he doesn't seem to have friends - he loves other children but is quite rough with my dd - I think he wants that sort of rough and tumble play.
Regarding provision - I must say the link speech therapist has been great - and though she is quite vague about diagnosis - I have really felt she was on my side...and has gone out of her way to help ds in his nursery - we live in one borough and ds goes to nursery in another - which means of course they can't work together. I was thinking of looking into some private therapy but don't think I can afford it...am going to ask about more support when I next see her.

Lady - thankyou you've just described how I'm feeling about ds - only you put it an awful lot better! Believe me I understand what you feel even if I'm struggling on where to go next....

Janx - we're in the same situation with salt in one county and pre-school in the next but must admit that our salt has sneaked over the border to visit ds in pre-school and help his senco - only prob is shes off on maternity leave in Feb :(

I have found it very difficult to find information about services in the borough, and I'm not sure that anything is centralised. We have a Children Centre that takes care of things like Physiotherapy, Psychology, and other children's services but they are not linked to SaLT services which is based at the other end of the borough. Other services like peadiatric hearing tests are also part of a different service. And there's ENT services in hospital which isn't linked to anything. I'm not sure that the schools have all the information either.

I think that if you write to the local SaLT services you might get a better general. Health visitors (generally) don't have an overall view of all this either.

Blueberry - I am in Hackney in London - not sure there is an equivalent school like yours which sounds great.
Day two of potty training - I can't believe how much he wees Shock....lots of accidents today - am going to have to send half a wardrobe to nursery tomorrow. At least he likes the idea of it, but not sure he gets it atm

BlueberryPancake · 04/01/2011 20:40

Hi Janx I'm in Wanstead, do you know the area?

The best think I did was to moderate and monitor the drinks and take DS to potty about 20 minutes after the drink.

janx · 05/01/2011 14:31

Hi -I grew up in Walthamstow so did know the area a bit...now live in Stoke Newington.
Am a work today -so potty training is over to nursery today

Hi
I think you are tremendously supportive to each other, and that always helps.
I see Cued Articulation has been mentioned more than once and I just wanted to add that it is really great for anyone (child or adult) who has trouble recognising and producing sounds.
I am actually a CA trainer and I know it works! If you have a SLT working with your child, ask her/him about it.

movingwest · 01/02/2011 21:33

I am in n16 too janx! Hope you don't mind me joining in, everyone I know in rl has ridiculously articulate toddlers...

DS is 3.4 with a speech delay and while he is getting more confident with me and dh and our families he is still painfully shy with others

His playgroup is full of confident kids and he is petrified of some of them, just wants to play with toys. He finds it impossible to join in and bends almost double if another child tries to play with him.

I am not worried (any more!) about his development as I can see it is lack of confidence affecting him.

So hard to see him play by himself though Sad

Have they ruled out auditory processing problems contributing to his speech delay?

My dd was unintelligble to us at 4 and after sound therapy has near perfect speech in a year with some speech therapy support.

Cargirl - that is interesting - I think ds has auditory processing problems -we are waiting for a referal to the nuffield for a proper diagnosis

MovingWest - how nice you are in Stokey - where does your ds go to playgroup? I don't know anyone locally who has a dc with speech delay - I spent my life explaining about his speech!

CarGirl · 01/02/2011 22:04

Her hearing test results were really bad and after just 6 weeks the improvement was huge. It was only at that point the therapist confessed that he hadn't been hopeful that it was a processing problem and thought it could well be a permanent physical hearing problem Shock

Wasn't cheap but worth it - started reception on the SEN list and her very experienced teacher couldn't understand her, by the end of R she was taken off the list and is darn near perfect.

movingwest · 01/02/2011 22:10

Know what you mean about explaining all the time janx! He is at n16 Playgroup on Church St a few mornings a week. Just for another month though. We are seeing a SALT once a week but to be honest she is quite vague about diagnosing him or prognosis.

Is your son at a local nursery?

CarGirl · 01/02/2011 22:14

If you get stuck I live the near the meath school in Ottershaw, it's some national i-can centre. I believe it has a fantastic reputation for diagnosing dc with severe speech disorders.

The seem to do assessments where you take them for a few days.

janx · 02/02/2011 12:40

moving - ds is at nursery the other side of clissold park, but we live very near Church Street - are you movingwest?.....It would be really nice to meet and have a coffee ( that sounds like a date!)...but I never meet anyone else locally with this sort of problem

movingwest · 03/02/2011 00:13

We are moving west, wish I'd 'met' you earlier! Around in feb though, would love to meet up. How best to do it?

janx · 03/02/2011 08:30

I will email you through message poster. I don't work on Thurs/Fridays so those are best for me
