Talk to me about tantrums

I have two kids and neither of them have ever had serious tantrums. I don't know why, they just don't - except the odd stump the floor with feet when they can't have a 4th biscuit or something stupid. Then I distract, but don't give in.

I find it really hard not to judge other people and children who have massive fits for no obvious reasons. I try not to judge them, but deep down I do. Help me understand tantrums, why people think it's fine and acceptable to ignore.

I think you are very lucky. I have a DS who has horrific tantrums (involving head banging) and has from a very early age (6 months or so). He actually got even worse at 3. I also have DD2 who has the occasional shriek or stamp of the foot and nothing worse (21 months).

As I am not two people I can only deduce that it must be down to personality.

DS's tantrums get a lot worse if he gets any attention for them. If we ignore him, they finish quite quickly and are over and done with.

You are VERY lucky. I have 4 kids and two of them used to have horrific tantrums. My daughter used to have them lasting an hour or more. It's definitely down to personality as I've never given in to tantrums and always had firm boundaries. I think you're being a little smug here, as ignoring a tantrum stops a child getting negative attention. Now my children are older, I have reaped the rewards of my discipline, and they all know how to behave.
