2 year old hates low noises

2 yr old dd has twice in the last month had bouts of hysteria due to certain noises. First of all we were staying with my In-Laws. Their neighbours were having an extension built and the intermittent drilling would set her off. Yesterday we were at a Mums and Tots and initally I didn't realise what had caused it until we were having a singsong and she burst into tears again. A child was bashing randomly on the lower keys of the piano. After the first time yesterday it took me over half an hour to calm her down. She is reasonably articulate but could not tell me what was wrong. Second time we just made for the door as it was towards the end of the session anyway.

She can be quite a clingy child anyway, but is getting better, so I want her to feel comfortable enough to wander around and play but am already concerned as to how to deal with it next time. If it isn't the piano another noise such as an alarm may trigger her. I mentioned it to our paediatrician at her routine 2-year check this morning and she suggests that she is just oversensitive to certain frequencies, like when a train screeches into a station and the sound goes through you.

Does anyone have any similar experiences and how can I help her deal with this.

At 2 I wouldn't be too concerned- I think children usually grow out of it. Just keep her away from th sounds. if your child continues to be unable to bear certain frequencies there are things you can do. We play a tape to ds1 each day which covers a whole range of frequencies - you just start playing it at a low volume and slowly increase- we got it as part of the BIBIC programme- but maybe they would supply a copy of the tape without the programme. Their contact details are here; www.bibic.org.uk/

Otherwise there are programmes like AIT which can help sound sensitivty, but they are expensive and probably not worth considering for a 2 year old.
