Is my 8 week old teething? Could this last for months?!

Call me crazy, but I'm sure my 8 wk old DD is teething. She is really dribbly - she never used to be - to the point that the necks of everything she wears are soaked through. Her urine smells really concentrated and she's getting nappy rash which again she never had before. I've had a peek in her mouth and think I can see some White bits but I know these could be calcium deposits. Shes very fussy at the breast and wakes up crying for no reason. Has anyone got any experience with early teething? Am I just reading too much into it? If it is teething, will these symptoms last long? I've heard stories of symptoms starting early but no teeth for months! Thanks in advance :)

Hi there,

it's perfectly possible, some babies are born with teeth (!)

They also can move around in her gums for ages before actually cutting through.

My kids always get terrible nappy rash when they're teething, the wee just seems to turn acidic. Slather a thick layer of Sudocrem on with every nappy, and stick with cotton wool and water if you've moved on to wipes.

Also, although it does sound like teething, with the symptoms you've mentioned I would want to rule out thrush, especially if you're breastfeeding.

Good luck with your LO.

She sounds exactly like my DD, who started the drooly/smelly wee/nappy rash thing really early. Her first tooth broke through the day before yesterday, she's 7mo now.

If it helps, she wasn't like it constantly for that whole time, it would last a few days then go away for a couple of weeks. I always put that down to her teeth moving under her gums.

I just leave her with a nappy off for a few minutes to give her chance to dry out a bit which seems to help with the nappy rash.

Could be teething or thrush - worth getting it checked as easily treated if it is thrush.

My DD has been teething since about 12 weeks - she's now 7 months old and STILL no teeth!

OMG I'm so glad it's not just my DD! She started at 10wks with teething, my brother cut a tooth at 11wks so just assumed she would too...she is nearly 8m now and STILL no teeth!

It's rubbish for them, but once your baby is 12wks (I think, do check with HV/pharmacist) she can have baby ibuprofen which seems to work better on teething pain. We've also found the toy keys are great for her to chew on, it's hard when they're so little as they can't hold it themselves and most "teethers" are too big for their wee mouths :(

Poor baby, I hope she feels better soon. You could pop her to GP for a check of her ears, I did this to be on the safe side but KNEW it was teeth.

Just read my post back and it's not very helpful!
As NineLadies says, it isn't constant, I'd say we've had a bad day once every two or three weeks, and it gets easier as they get older and are more easy to distract with toys and cuddles.

Thanks for all the replies. Will get her checked fir thrush as she is being very fussy on the breast, but am becoming more convinced it's teething, especially as just now I was burping her sitting up with hand on her chin and she started gumming my finger! Thanks for the tip about the keys - we got her a teething ring and it's far too big for her tiny mouth, bless her!
Poor little thing, she's ever so good but there's definitely something going on! Unfortunately with Christmas we won't get to the doctors till Weds at the earliest :(
Thanks again
