This may sound mad, but do I close the bedroom door

I think I may sound a bit of a panicky first time mum - but my 7 month old ds is really noisy at night - waking, not crying, but chatting and making noises for a good hour and half each night, waking me, dh and daughter - nightmare!!!!! Someone has said to close ours, and his bedroom door, but for some reason this panicks me a little? Any reassurance or opinions gratefully received!!!

I'm marking my place as I have a similar concern. We're shortly going to put DD (7.5 mo) into her own room.
I had assumed we would leave her and our bedroom doors open but DH thinks we should close them.

I'm worried she might cry and I won't hear her (bit pfb).

I thought about a baby monitor turned down low so we hear her crying but not chatting.

Thats my worry too! Have had the same thoughts about the baby monitor! Thanks, I'm glad its not just me!!

After more than 10 years we still cant go to sleep with either DSs or our bedroom door closed. My parents were the same with us.

I just dont think I could sleep without being able to hear them.

I could do without being woken up at 6.30 am when they are reading quietly though. Hmm

I keep our door open and our 3 year old dd. Our older 2 dd's now choose to close their doors.

FanjoKazooie · 20/12/2010 00:07

I still keep our door open between us and our DCs room (age 3 and 6) and our youngest still sleeps in with us (10 months).

Not convinced I would hear the occasional mid-sleep vomit or nightmare etc if we closed the doors.

That said, ours are pretty quiet at night, not sure what I would do in your situation.

Have always closed doors. Keeps the noise and any light out of their rooms, so hopefully they sleep better. When babies I had a monitor and when older I've always heard them if they need me.

A friend of mine stayed in a hotel with her 4 year old and she would not go to sleep with the door shut. Not the ideal place to have an open door Grin

SparklyJules · 20/12/2010 00:29

I shut the DCs doors but keep ours slightly open... to let the cat in and out! They have bedrooms either side of our own so we hear (or rather, I hear) every little noise they make.

FrameyMcFrame · 20/12/2010 00:36

I keep my DD's door open still and she's 9!

sunndydays · 20/12/2010 07:59

Dd is six months and we have always shut her door since she has been in her own room, do the same for daytime naps too

Lovethesea · 20/12/2010 11:06

I've always shut our bedroom doors at night - partly to help with quiet and dark for sleeping, partly because it's a small house so we can hear each other easily - but mostly because I know it would buy us lifesaving time if there was a fire.

When I did fire training for work the biggest difference they stressed was people closing doors at night, both downstairs in the house and bedroom doors when sleeping. They said it made a big difference in outcomes of house fires.

the kids doors are shut but ours is left open a little

i always close my dc doors otherwise they would get disturbed too easily, as its a flat so not much distance from living room and their bedrooms. i have done it since they were v small, just used a monitor. but now dont bother with a monitor as i know ill hear them. i dont think realistically theres too much reason to panic, it maybe more of a psychological thing?? if she is being disturbed or disturbing others in your house i'd say its worth a try?
