Large babies - advice

Advice and other mothers in the same position needed.
I gave birth to my first DS in April and he weighed in at 10.15, at 17 weeks he weighed 21.10, he is now 21 weeks and god knows what he weighs, I am going tomorrow to check it out.
My DS is gorgeous with a fantastic personality always smiling and laughing, he is not chubby just solid and very long.
BUT nearly everyone has to comment on how big he is, they call him - huge, a bruiser, big, chubby, giant, massive etc etc etc. As you are all aware out there, any perceived criticism of our children leads to tears, frustration and anger. Has anyone any ideas on how to deal with these comments.
Also feeding a larger than average child, I breastfeed DS and he gets 2 meals a day of fruit and rice, but how much milk should he be getting as he does not fit in with any of the general advice you get.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello all, am worried mum of gigantic and ever huger child - 3 1/2 months, 22 lbs, length of 12 month old, feet suze of 2 yr old!!! Anyone have a similar sized child? Lots of people implying that I overfeed/feed solids, but i do neither - normal amounts of milk. Health visitor has suggested tests for thyroid and hormonal problems. Has anyone come across this and has anyone any advice? Lots of experience of dealing with nasty big baby comments already in such a short time! Cheers ...

I really believe that you cannot over feed a baby, if they dont want it they will not take it and if they have had too much they will be sick!!! So don't worry. My DD has been over the 99.7th centile (i.e. well over the "red") since she was about 8 weeks, the HV even sent me to the dietician at the hospital as they were concerned!!! She was a late mover so the weight gain continued until she was crawling at 9 months and now she is walking (12 months) I don't know where she has gone!! She was in 12-18 months clothes in Feb this year (at 5 months!!) and 7 months later she is still in them al be it I dont have to roll them up anymore!! She was the most contented and happy go lucky baby I have ever met and I think that was down to her size but at the time (until the dietician at the hospital told me not to worry) I thought I was doing something wrong and constantly worried she was eating too much!! She wasn't x

My ds was 10lb 9oz when born and my dd was 9lb so both big babies. They both had, and still have, big appetites. I breasfed both but introduced formula at about 4 months and did both then weened them both at around 5 months. My son is 3.6 years yet looks like a 5 year old - he is very tall and thin! My dd is 1.2 years and is tall for her age but has a little rotund tummy which she loves showing off....don't ever worry about what people say! The hardest I find is people expect my ds to be a lot more grown-up than he is for his age because they think he is so much older than 3 1/2! I get comments all the time about how tall he is and I just agree. I am happy with big babies...they felt less fragile when little ones and seem so sturdy!! Enjoy them and don't let peoples comments worry you.

DD1 was 9lb at birth and her sister and brother were slightly less, but born earlier so all were fairly big, but DD1 in particular got lots of comments including 'little buddah'. I hated the comments about her being 'boyish' etc. However she is 7 now and no different from her friends and classmates, she is one of the taller girls, but not the tallest and as slim as every other 7 year old. It all evens out in the end, I think she lost most of her 'cubbyness' by 4.

Agree with everyone else that big is good and nothing to be anything other than happy about. My ds (3) was born at 7lb 7oz but within 10 weeks and being bf had munched his way up to the 98 centile and for all I know is there still (he is fairly large).

2 practical things (which have also been said):

  1. From lugging my 2 fairly heavy children around, have a very bad back, so be careful.
  1. Because ds is large, even I sometimes forget he is only 3 and expect more from him than he can deliver.

I agree I love my 2 Ds's and they were both born over 10lbs and I'm pg again!! My ds1 size has calmed down a bit but at 4 he is still bigger than average but my ds2 is still huge he is off the charts. You do get the comments from other people he has been called a monster and various other things that I know people don't mean to upset me but sometimes they do hurt. I have kept tabs on his diet and he is not being overfed but he just doesn't seem to be slowing down, he's nearly 3. The expense can be a bit of a nightmare because hand me downs don't work because my eldest isn't growing out of his clothes quick enough for the younger one! I'm just waiting for them to grow up and be the best rugby players this world has ever seen

Mine was 9lb 4oz at birth and is now 25lb (he is 10 months and one week) My entire family is tall and (tallest cousin beign 6ft7) I'm not concerned about his size. He will dictate how much food he wants do not worry too much at this stage.

Pollux · 04/10/2006 13:47

DS was/is a big baby. He was 9lb 7oz when he was born (2 days early) and last time he was weighed was a week after his first birthday when he weighed 27lb 4oz.

I used to get all the comments from 'bruiser' to 'He looks like Popeye' and one very kind auntie on DH's side said (because he is strawberry blond) 'He looks just like Butch Dingle al la Emmerdale' I mean, WTF!!!!

The comments used to bother me but not any more. I think he is lovely. Apart from anything else, he has really slimmed down now as he is always on the move (typical 17 month old) but I'm sure his legs are lined with lead as he is still solid lol

Incidentally, DD who is 5 months old is quite petite, on 25th percentile for length and weight. Strange how nature works.

2Babies0Bumps · 04/10/2006 13:54

ds1 was 9lb9.5 and ds2 10lb12.5.
yet both are like dh who now at 25 is a 32 waist.
dhs family feel the need to comment on how 'huge' our boys are every time we see them and pisses me off something chronic.

I had two big babies - 9.9 and 10.6 and now at 5 and 10 they are both on the slightly tall side of average. What I didn't like is, because I'm quite small, there was always tutting at antenatal visits -"oh - this is a big baby..." and nmuttering about extra scans and possible c sections and stuff like that. Then, when I was 8 months pregnant I saw a new consultant who beamed as he prodded my gigantic bump and said " Oh good, there's a nice sturdy baby in there!" I went out with such a spring in my step - it was so nice for the baby's size to be a positive. Just feed them normally, their peers will probably catch up by the time they leave primary school - and if they don't, tall's good!(speaking as a 5ft3 in her socks woman!)
