Potty training - shouldn't my ds have got the idea by now?

ds3 is 2yrs 9mths. He has no inclination whatsoever about going to the toilet or on the potty. Some months ago he would sit on the toilet or potty for a few minutes before getting in the bath but would never do anything.

Over the last few weeks he has produced a wee now and again for which I have rewarded him with a sticker. I have sometimes puit a pull-up him and sometines a pair of pants but he just wets himself with no apparent realisation he is doing it.

His speech is very very delayed and sees a SALT. He does not have a word or sign he could use to indicate "toilet" nor does he seem keen to learn one when I show him. He does pick up other signs really quickly though.

At his age, should I be worried that he is showing no interest? Have others MNers had such late developers as it were? I am worried that he shows no interest - and wonder whether to really make a concerted effort or leave it a while longer?

Any advice?

DS1 was toilet trained (hated the potty) at 2yrs and 11 months......and even then he was 'co-erced' (forced really as he had no 'will' to do it AT ALL) into it as I was expecting DS2 3 months later, and didn't want to wait until the following summer (when he's have been getting close to 4) to do it.

Even know he sometimes does poo's in his pants (he's just turned 5) and really doesn't seem to care

queen eagle
a friend of mine who had twins told me not to bother training til 1.the summer, 2.they could really understand.
dd was 2yrs 10mths and 2 wks middle august and she took to it immediatly and within a week she was fine on the potty, wk later did the poo in it and last week on the loo for bohth.

late developers? whats the rush?

i use to tell dd i was going to the loo for ages beforehand and what i did - not too blantant - but enough for her to know why i didnt use a nappy.

honestly, dont fret about his age, i certainly didntlet others bother me about my dd

QueenEagle · 27/09/2005 20:44

I think he does understand, just he isn't bothered yet.

I keep telling dh that he is perfectly normal even though I secretly wonder why he hasn't mastered it yet, when my older 3 (not dh's) had cracked it by the age of 2yrs 4mths.

Guess I just need to leave it and relax then?

IT took us about 5 weeks with DS1 (so cracked it just after he turned 3). But I had 2 friends who waited until their DS's were already 3 before starting - and it took a week for them (lucky cow's LOL)

QueenEagle · 27/09/2005 20:48

I was one of those lucky cows with my older 3. They wanted to do it, kept taking their nappies off and were dry during the day within a week and also at night less than a week afte rthat!

I was kinda hoping ds3 would be the same but seems he is a law unto himself!

and just as a warning - seen as though your DS is't 'bothered' - and the fact that your others were dry and night fast too........

DS1 is now 5 - and still in nappies at night

Relax, there is plenty of time, and boys are statisticly lazy anyway My DS was 3.6 before he got it. I would leve him for now and try again in the new year.

waterfalls · 27/09/2005 20:53

Yes, my DS will be 5 in Feb AND STILL IN NAPPIES AT NIGHT.

waterfalls · 27/09/2005 20:54

oops, sorry about caps, I am not shouting at you (honest)

anniebear · 27/09/2005 21:23

I wouldn't be bothered yet, far from it

Lots of children are 3 before they are potty trained

BeeBee67 · 27/09/2005 21:40

Yup, 3.8 here before he even got interested. Did it overnight though

magnolia1 · 28/09/2005 07:44

One of my twins were 3 before she was out of nappies in the day. Her sister was 2!!

And the twin who was late in potty training was still in nappies at age 5.

But she is now 6 and out of nappies with the 'occasional' accident.

You will get there in the end I promise

ScreamEagle · 03/10/2005 16:17

I am reviving this as ds3 started playgroup today. When I said that he was still in nappies, the staff seemed amazed and suggested I put him in pants and they would take him to the loo. I declined and said I would put him in pull ups instead. They will have to phone me if he does a poo and I will have to go down there to change him.

Surely there are others his age still not fully toilet trained???

Caththerese1973 · 04/10/2005 12:32

Article I read recently said average age for toilet training these days is around three. The theory is that disposables make kids harder to train because they don't get as uncomfortable as they do in cloth nappies. Even so, my brother who was in cloth nappies was 3 before he showed any interest (according to my mum).
Boys often take longer to learn than girls, too.
I wouldn't worry until he was three plus if I were you. My dd is 2 and a half and I pottered with the potty for a while, but she gets stressed about having accidents and actually asked to be put back into nappies. So I thought I would leave it for another three months.
She doesn't like it when she does a pooh, though - demands to be changed instantly. I think this is a good sign.

srreamangel,I am going through the exact same thing,in fact have stared a thread on it .

My ds was 3wks ago.I also have to go and change him at playgroup if he does a poo.I think it depends on the staff and whether it is something they abhore doing or not.I personally wish I had started training ds earlier as I think he will take ages to become reliable whatever age I start it .Perhaps If we had been doing this since he was just 2 he might get it by now.He is going to playgroup tomorrow with pants on for the first time.I hope he doesn't do a poo,but am resigned to going to change him if he messes.

If I was you I would persevere.I wish I had.
