When do babies outgrow the 'putting everything in their mouth' phase?

Toys, remote controls, magazines, fluff/dirt from the carpet.. nothing is out of bounds. Obviously we keep anything dangerous out of reach, but even if I hoovered twice a day I'm sure she'd find something unpleasant to eat. Today I fished what I think was a bit of doormat out of her mouth. Bleurgh. Please can someone reassure me that she will soon grow out of it?

Oh god, I want to know the answer to this one too, DS is 13mo - how old's your DD, OP?

BusyMisstletoeIzzy · 06/12/2010 14:45

She's 9 months. So I guess I could have at least 4 months to go Confused

About the same time that they realise they have other orifices to put things into Smile

I think they are all different. DS never really put anything into his mouth and I still occasionally have to prise coins etc out of DD's mouth (20 months).

The other day I turned round to see that DS (almost 10 months) had picked up one of my shoes and was sucking on it Shock

Oh dear! DD here likes to chew shoelaces.

I think it depends on the child. My DS1 was 5 or 6 and still putting everything in his mouth. However his baby brother never really did it even when he was at an age when it would be expected.

Interestingly the elder one had a dummy which he absolutely loved but DS2 refused point blank to have one so I think it depends on the child.

DS seems to do it a bit less now at 16 months then he did but not because he responds to being told not to! Just seems to be finding walking more interesting. Smile

Wellllllll - mine are 3.10 and 2.5 and STILL putting stuff in their mouths. Friend has two exactly same age - have never put things in their mouths. I remember almost fainting when I discovered she had hungry hippos for them to play with; mine would have eaten all the balls within about a week but hers never even contemplated it.

DrSeuss · 06/12/2010 21:35

By the age of about twenty five, I think.

mistletoeploppy · 06/12/2010 21:40

To be fair, I'm 32 and I put most things in my mouth still Grin
