Do you let your toddler go to the toilet on their own?

2.10yo DD has been toilet trained about 6 weeks and is very good, no accidents etc. The last week or so she's been taking herself off to the toilet on her own. She has a step and can reach the loo roll and the flush and she uses the bath taps to wash her hands. Mostly I run after her but I'm ill in bed at the mo and dh is a bit more lax on the childcare!

She has a good wipe at bedtime when her nappy goes on. Is she too young to be left to it?

No, she's not too young as long as she's capable. It depends on the child, not the age.

My DD was the same. As soon as she was trained and gained in confidence she took herself off without telling me. She's now 4 and the same.
The only time she calls me is when she does a poo as she prefers me to wipe her bottom.

Lol mine does....mine is 2 .9 and she also takes herself off to the loo, the only trouble is she then turns the taps on in the sink and floods us!

She then comes to me to tell me to wipe her...I let her go alone as she seems to like the independance! Its fine!

Ours swings between extremes! He sometimes likes to go on his own, to the point sometimes we don't even know he's been until I go in there later on - he just disappears off quietly, and has even been known to do a poo on his own without saying a word, he tries to wipe his own bottom though he isn't very good at it!

But more often, he insists one of us comes to "watch him" and although perfectly capable of doing it all himself, we have to watch every bit and keep chivvying him to wash his hands, flush etc etc while he drags it out for ages and tells me off if I stop watching or go away - especially if I have DD eating in the highchair in the other room at the same time, and need to keep an eye on her too... I think on balance I prefer when he goes on his own!

No, not too young to be left to it imo: once they learn in the first place, the whole idea is to have them do it all by themselves, after all. They can leave the door open in case they need to be fished out of the loo, and mine wanted me to wipe them after a poop until age 3ish (maybe 3.5)

If a child is being washed regularly there won't be a problem even if the wiping technique needs refining.

My 2.6 yr old takes himself off if he needs to go, but we are in a hot country so he only has a pair of shorts to deal with. Wees are fine, but I do have to be extra vigilant about him wandering off for a poo and forgetting to ask me to wipe his bottom.

It's been gradual here - it's mainly the stairs, tbh, if we were in a flat it would have been faster, as well as now it's so wintery she can't reach the lightswitch. Poos I still wipe her - she's 3.11. And we have the not turning off the taps and creating a great flood issue too! I don't think she's too young - if you are poorly, I am sure you have much more to worry about!

Interesting replies. It just feels a bit neglectful! She's fine though and calls for help if she needs it. And if it means that I escape the hour long monologue while she does a poo that can only be a good thing Wink
