Sleeping bag, not duvet in bed - please help, am desperate

Hope am posting in the right place....will try to keep it as brief as possible. For past month/6 wks my 26 mo ds has been nothing short of a NIGHTMARE at night. He was a good sleeper until he went into toddler bed (along with few other things that may be bit unsettling... I'm 6 month pg, he has started playgrp etc). Anyway upshot is, with no pattern whatsoever he is up randomly throughout the night, normally he goes back without a fuss but every 3rd or so night will be up and down like a yo-yo, crying, tantruming, calling for us. We have tried:

  • giving him benefit of the doubt for first week or so, reassurance and a quiet 'night night'...no joy....then
  • rapid return - no contact, no eye contact just putting him down- eventually he does stay in bed but then it starts all over again an hour later and this can go on until me or dp are angry, exhausted and upset.
  • cutting his naps (no pattern as to whether this is effective)
-cc, hate this but was at wits end, after 5 hours (!) on tues night he lay back down but was up again within an hour, last night he cried for about an hour and half and then lay himself back down but I had to go in and cover him as was so cold.... -there is a stairgate at hs door

....so my question is, shall I put him back in a sleeping bag???? he always loved it in his cot, my reasoning is that a) he cant get out of it or walk easily in it and might just realise its easier to stay in bed, b) maybe the duvet is part of the problem, I know a couple of kids who just dont like the 'heaviness' on them and kick it off
and c) if he does get out of bed and eventually goes back off on his own I dont need to get up and cover him (thus disturbing him) as he will already be warm....

I really am at a loss as this has been going on so long, I'm very tired and teary all the time and need to sort it....
thanks.

Have you already tried a warmer quilt/extra blanket? My two would always have worse nights when it started to get colder because I hadn't put enough warmth on the bed to start with. (Sorry if this seems obvious but it wasn't to me as I'd already put a bit extra on them.) A blanket or flat sheet tucked across the bed (rather than lengthwise) on top can help keep a duvet in place because there is so much to tuck in around the sides.

Otherwise I would probably keep on with rapid return, but I really feel for you as it can be totally exhausting.

My ds is 4.3 and still sleeps in a sleeping bag - he wakes up all the time without it on. I think it is worth a shot! Also ds doesn't wriggle around so much in his grobag so less likely to bang his head against the headboard / fall out of bed etc. But he does also have a duvet on top, he gets cold easily.

dont see any disadvantages to letting him sleep in a sleeping bag for longer if he feels happier and sleeps better. Learning to sleep under a duvet was quite a challenge for my ds too, and he didnt manage it until he was nearly three.

My DD1 was in her sleeping bag until over 2 and a half (when needed to be able to use potty at night) and loved it. Her bed was very low so she could easily get in and out and sack race round the room a tiny bit if she wanted a book or toy or something, but mainly she stayed in bed and slept really well. DD2 out of sleeping bag early (19 months ish) I can't remember why exactly. She was always waking up after throwing off duvet and cold or just running around. It may just have been that they are different characters but I'm not taking that risk with DS who will be staying in his sleeping bag for as long as possible!!

Just try putting him back in it and see what happens, maybe it will help.

Make sure you havea stairgate over his door - you don't want to risk him getting to the top of the stairs and falling down as he can't walk properly (also stairgate on door might be a good idea anyway so you can leave him to it in his room if he is running around).

Thankyou so much for all your advice....we are definitely going to give it a whirl and its nice to know that maybe he isnt the only toddler who is finding the bed thing tricky. I was just worried it was going 'backwards' but I'm reassured its not. We can do the duvet/reward chart in a few months when there is a bit more understanding and I'm not looking like a panda anymore!!!Fingers crossed it helps...even a teeny tiny bit!!!!

My DS (27 months) hates duvets. We put him in a vest, warm PJs and a fleecy sleepsuit and once he is asleep I sneak in and put a blanket over him (this usually ends up on the floor, but doesn't seem to cause distress the way a duvet does). We did try putting him back in a sleeping bag, but after a week or so of having not had it, he refused to go back in it.

We have discovered that he is also much better with a light on when he goes to bed (lamp level, not a night light).
