Hi, can someone reassure me?

My beautiful baby girl is 4 weeks old (5 weeks on Friday)

She sleep, sleeps and sleeps some more! I have very few times in the day when she is alert, mostly she feeds and sleeps. She's really good throughout the night too.
I expected this when she was newborn but shouldn't she be just a little bit more wakeful by now?
How much do your young babies sleep? And should I wake her up a bit more in the day?

Thanks!

she is still very young, gradually she will start sleeping less but i wouldn't worry for now?

Hi Sarahlou8 - my twin dds were like this until about 2 weeks ago (they've just turned 10 weeks old). I'd say enjoy it while you can, she'll "wake up" when she's ready! (Am assuming there are no issues with feeding and weight gain?)

TheUnmentioned · 23/11/2010 16:59

when she is awake is she alert even iif only for short times?

dd was like this until the last couple of weeks - she is 8 weeks

does she look jaundiced at all

megonthemoon · 23/11/2010 17:03

My Dd is 8 weeks and has started having longer alert periods but did mainly just sleep the First 6 weeks.

When she is awake does she seem alert - hold your gaze, startle at loud sounds, maybe look like she's trying to smile?

Sarahlou8 · 23/11/2010 17:06

No she's feeding well and putting on a steady ounce a day.

Just as an example, today she woke at 7.30am napped on and off until 10.30, slept solidly from 10.30am-2pm,then 3pm-4.15pm, just picked her up for a nappy change and a cuddle and she nodded off while I was holding her upright on my knee (bless!)and she is still asleep.

She is my third so I should know better than to worry, but books and websites say to expect 10-15ish hours of sleep per 24 hrs, no way is she awake for 9 hours in 24!!

Hi, yes when she's awake, she is alert and has started to smile which is lovely. But it's only minutes later that she starts to cry and if I pick her up and cuddle her, off she goes, back to dreamland!

I'm just not used to this. DD1 had to be sung to, rocked, cuddles and fed to get her to sleep for 20 minutes!

Smile Sounds like she's fine then. You coudl always mention it to the doctor at your 6 week check but I reckon you've been blessed with an "easy" baby!

megonthemoon · 23/11/2010 19:22

I'm the same - can't believe that I may have an easy one after a not so straightforward DS

If it makes you feel better, she'll probably be a terrible teen just like mine will be :o

lydiamama · 23/11/2010 19:27

How lucky!!!!! Mine took forever to get to sleep. I would mention it to the doctor, as you have previous experience I believed you would realize if something is wrong, so yes bellabelly is right to say you are blessed. I want the recipe for my next one, pleaseWink
