solids and sleep

My DD (7 mo) has been a great sleeper since the early days. 7.30pm-9am-ish with a dream feed (this has recently cut back to 7.30-7ish, which is absolutely fine). I started her on solids about 6 weeks ago and since then her sleep has been a bit more restless. Nothing too bad, but she cries out during the night, almost like a mini-waking. Sometimes she'll do it once, other times twice and then on a bad night she can do it four or five times (often within a periods of about an hour, rather than spread out through the night) and often around the 4am mark.

She'll cry for maybe a minute or so and then go back to sleep. My feeling is that she's in a bit of discomfort and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar after starting solids and if there's anything you can do to ease tummy cramps and the like. She has baby rice with fruit before bed. Have also posted in sleep.

It does sound as though she is in some discomfort. Maybe she might be intolerant to something that you are giving her. Might be an idea to cut out some things to see if that helps. Also are her poos a lot more solid? If so, it may be that she is finding that uncomfortable and maybe needs a little more liquid in diet wither in way of fruit or drink or diluting the food a little with some water.

thanks tiger, that's useful advice. The poos are a bit more solid, yes. She's a terrible one for drinking water - flat out refuses it so she may be a bit bunged up I suppose.

One of my girls did this (hasn't done it in the last month or so) and when i mentioned it to the Dr, she suggested it might be night terrors and that she'd probably grow out of it. She would let out a cry/cries and when i'd go in, she wouldn't seem to know i was there and just go back to sleep.I suffered too and still do on rare occasions and have woken my hubby up in the past letting out a blood curdling howl so i'm not sure about the growing out of it, but hopefully she will. I'd have a quick chat with your Dr, just for peace of mind.

i went to my gp for the same issue and he gave me calpol and infacol, saying that sometimes the introduction of solid food can cause colics... ( calpol was bc of a sorethroat which could have been making the discomfort a bit worse)

however 4am is a bit too late for colics from her last feed...

I would take her off baby rice as it sounds like it is causing some abdominal discomfort.
