13mo DD obese?

Sorry, I made the thread title eye-catching but I AM really worried about her weight.

She was 75th centile until 6 months, then crept up and up and was 98th (weight and height although the height measurement was a bit flaky). HV wasn't too bothered, then I moved house....

Only saw new HV once before I went back to work but she said "we don't put toddlers on diets but for children like [DD] you must watch her portion sizes (everything to be the size of the palm of her hand).

I haven't had her weighed since but she is still very chubby, just beginning to walk and has been crawling for a couple of months.

Nursery feed her Mon-Fri, at the weekend she'll have:

7oz milk first thing
Breakfast: weetabix with milk
snack: 2 or 3 minibreadsticks/ricecakes
Lunch: pasta or rice with meat and veg sauce - the size of one of those pre-made meals for 10/12 mth olds (like Hipp Organic, Heinz Mums Own etc) although I do sometimes make my own! and a pot of fruit puree
7oz milk after her nap
1/4 banana as a snack
Tea: similar to lunch but with a yogurt
Sometimes she'll have another ricecake/mini biscuit for a snack
7oz of milk before bed.

Am I contributing to the obesity epidemic? I'm starting to feel people are judging me whenever I feed her. She asks for food a LOT! (She can say "more" and points at the food cupboard Blush!) I try to just stick to what I've listed above.

Agghh!!!! What am I doing wrong?!!!!

I dont think you need to worry so much, My daughter has been on the 98th centile for both weight and height and has never really been chubby but very robust.

From what you say you give her she is having a healthy diet, and as she starts to walk and run around she will grow into her size and not appear as chubby as you think. At 13 months, you need to not stress as much as you are and not put her on a diet. Just give her the opportunities to have plenty of exercise, which is easy at this age when all they want to do is run around.

That diet sounds perfect to ,...apart from there's not enough veg and fruit maybe...but I am not a dietician!

I remember my own DDs at the same or similar age, they used to no have meat and pasta every day...sometimes I would do fish or brown rice...and lots of veg...steamed.

Does she have pasta daily?

Perfect to me! Not "perfect to"

Looking at the diet again, she seems to have a lot of carbs...could snacks be fruit and yogurt? Sot fruits like oranges and strawberries are good.

If she's on the same centile for weight and height, you don't need to worry.

Though nutrition-wise, you could do a bit better, tbh. Babies need good fats- avocado, for example. Does she eat eggs? They have plenty of good stuff. More fruit. Less ricecakes etc.

She eats all types of carbs, rice/potato/bread/cous cous - not just pasta to answer that question.

Don't forget I only feed her on Saturday and Sunday. Nursery is excellent and does loads of lovely fresh interesting food every day.

If I buy a variety of fresh fruit and veg for her (and don't cook it all into some sort of sauce) then it goes off before it's used (as she only eats here Saturday and Sunday). I do offer her fruit as snacks, she chews it then spits it out, except banana, which is usually spat out and reconsumed about 5 times!

Will try eggs again. she couldn't get along with the texture (I think) the last time I tried.

Oh, Sad! I can't believe how cr*p I am!

No, no, you're not crap!Your baby has an adequate diet and better than lots.

But why does she eat only sauces? Can you offer cooked veg like broccoli or carrots that she can eat herself? Just to get her slowly used to different texturs etc.

If you cook a batch of sauce, you can freeze it in small portions-and voila-you have enough for several weekends!

She can say 'more' already Grin-what a bright little thing!

textures!
