Suddenly not sleeping!!

Hi,

dd nearly 8 month and been amazing sleeper since 3 mnths. We have been on holiday for 1 week and since returning dd has not been same.

when put in cot, cries for up to 1 hr. Then wakes all night every 2 hrs. She has had viral infection for past 2 weeks but this is not a problem of a daytime.

She has no teeth yet so could this just be due to teething?

Have resorted to bringing her into bed twice now as she settles ok then!

Is this just a phase? Will my angel sleeper return????

mmm, could be teething, have you changed her cuddlies/washed them or anything that could make her not associate bed with bed, if you get my drift? looks like you might have to go down the cc route, if she doesn't settle down next week...was there a time difference where you went?

1suddenlysleepless · 19/09/2005 20:20

hi no time difference on holiday and nothing changed in bedtime routine etc

Hi
if it's any reassurance, we have also just returned from 1 weeks holiday (down to Devon)and ds has forgotten how to sleep!
Think it's the strange cot etc, unfamiliar environment. Came home 9 days ago and slowly seem to be coming right again (touch wood!!).
Started off waking 3 or 4 times a night, only settling by coming into our bed. Last night, he slept until 4.10 before waking and coming in with us (won't settle otherwise - what I mean is, we're too knackered and don't have patience to perservere! )
Hope your ds settles down too. Doesn't it seem tortorous to suddenly be woken at night again .

sorry, I meant dd !

This is great news! You are right we have been so spoilt with her usual sleep pattern. Expecting number 2 in 5 months so extra tired at the moment

Can't bear the thought of doing the sleep learning thing with dd again!

I can't believe how intolerant we are already to a broken nights sleep!!
Did dd sleep well on hols? Ds was in a tiny cot, more like a prison! He had no room to move really. Hopefully he's just adjusting to the upheaval - fingers crossed for you and me!

yes was fine on hols really. W were in hotel so maybe she got used to us all in the same room. Its amazing how quickly their routine can be spoilt!

Good luck to you too

I put dd too sleep at 8.30pm tonight, 1 hr later than normal but she has gone down no probs today so fingers crossed !!!

She might be teething, but also 8 months is typically when separation anxiety starts. Ie: she wakes, remembers mummy and wonders where you are. Very young babies are not capable of this. They don't really have the emotional capacity to get anxious about their mum not being around.
It's a normal problem in an eight month old. Go with it for as long as you can stand it. If she's not sleeping through still by 12 months or so, consider some 'sleep training'. I had to do this with my dd. It involves letting the baby learn to re-settle herself, either by 'crying it out' or 'Ferberising' (crying it out but with you coming in every ten mins or so to reassure her without picking her up).
It's a controversial issue: many parents feel that sleep training is cruel. In my case, I was just so tired that I felt something had to be done. But give it time. Keep in mind that sleep problems in kids of this age are always ultimately resolved - the hell of exhaustion will not last forever!

1SS - just realised what you said....is there only going to be 13 months between your two?! If so, wow!
How is the sleeping going? Ds woke about 4.30 last night so brought him into our bed as too knackered to do anything else!

1suddenlysleepless · 22/09/2005 20:18

dd appears to be cracking it - she is now sleeping agian for 9 hrs with no wake ups!

She finally comes into our bed for cuddle 5:30am ish!!!

There will be 13 months between my 2 - must be crazy!

I think the separation problem could be part of the problem as she appears to cry more when you leave the room etc now as well!

Ahh, good for you. Lets hope no.2 is as good a sleeper as your dd .
Ds has never been a fab sleeper but we had a really good couple of months before we went on holiday where he'd sleep 10 or 11 hours. Fingers crossed that returns v.soon !
