My almost 2 yr old DS has just legged it from our study as I'm about to hoover it - haven't even turned it on yet! - can't believe he's still frightened of the hoover - it's not like I don't do it that often (honest !) - anyone else's children still do this?

i wasn't scared of the hoover when i was little but i really, really, really hated the noise. i used to leave the room because it just drove me crazy

lalaa · 16/09/2005 10:52

My dd (2.10) was scared until about three months ago. She now strokes and talks to it!

Carla · 16/09/2005 10:53

JTS - YES! And they're now 5 and 7, and have only just become accustomed to the noise. I think I did that bit badly. Should have just made them tolerate it.

JonesTheSteam · 16/09/2005 10:54

Awwww - lalaa - that's so cute - mine cries if he's in the same room - always makes a hasty exit (if he can !)

Carla - it's never bothered my daughter (now 4) but it's always freaked my son out - don't know why!!!!

Ds 19mths, scared stiff of hoover, always has been.
Other than that, shows zero fear of anything, even when he should !

So how do we explain this ??????

nonstarter · 16/09/2005 11:21

I have had the same problem and found that a toy hoover (ours even made a quieter hoover type noise) gradually reduced the fear of the hoover as they could play along and imitate what was going to happen when mummy got the "silly" big noisy hoover out (we try and substitute the word silly for scary when something has been declared scary)

Hattie05 · 16/09/2005 11:23

My dd - nearly three, was like this. She hides behind the sofa and i have to warn her before i turn it on otherwise it scares her.

When she was younger she used to cry and i carried her whilst hoovering . But then some therapy with her daddy helped. They 'played' with the hoover pressing the button on and and off and sucking things up the nozzle. The fear has gone, i just think she hates the noise now.

JonesTheSteam · 16/09/2005 11:24

What confuses me though, is that if I leave the hoover out where DS can get at it, he picks it up and pushes it around as if he's cleaning the floor. So it's obviously the noise and not the actual hoover - but he's not scared by loud noises at all usually - even at my MIL's the other week when the Airforce were flying their planes low over the bungalow - he didn't freak out but his 3 yr old cousin did!!!

Yup. Started being afraid at 1 ish and is still afraid now at 17 months. Luckily for her I rarely hoover...

No, I am not lazy! Cheeky... I have wooden floors!

yes, my youngest was terrified of hoover till she was about 3. Good excuse for having mucky house!

hornbag · 16/09/2005 19:45

Our DD was scared of hoover from around 12months old. Our solution was that on a Saturday morning DP would take her to do the weekly food shop whilst I got on with the hoovering and general housework. (Managed to do other mini-clean ups, if needed, during daytime naps). Great thing is it means I've now avoided doing the food shop for almost 5 yrs as the tradition has continued!!

pindy · 16/09/2005 20:12

Mine loved it !!!! I read somewhere that it was "white noise" !!!!!! - and that it sent kids to sleep almost immediately - so I (we DH!!) made a tape of the hoover - how sad? - and played it continuously at bedtime and they just fell asleep!!! Yep, it worked and they have always put up with the hoover.

Sorry for such a boring post

Monstersmum · 16/09/2005 20:55

Me too!! Hate using it!
I ws terrified of it asa child apparently - that has stayed with me!

DS on the other had was obsessed - used to let him hoover away for ages as it kept him happy!

Unfortunately just as he was about to become useful at it, he lost interest!

loulounz · 16/09/2005 21:49

Agree with hattie05 - my eldest dd (3) used to run away, cry, hide etc. as soon as it was switched on and cover her ears saying it was too loud.

I let her help hoover up, played games "hoovering" her up - putting nozzle on her leg/clothes etc and making it fun, and chasing her little sister (1) (who loves the hoover) round the room - she then wanted to join in and play with us. Doesn't bother her now!
