lying down tantrumming

Am at my wits end with DS 3.1's behaviour. He will not walk anywhere with me. He either runs off (into the road) or swings off my hands and collapses his legs and lies down on the pavement, doesnt matter if there is a puddle he will lie in it. He will not hand hold and he is completely unpredictable and will run off in a split second.

My Maclaren buggy broke recently, and I managed to get another buggy of a friend, but he is too big for it, and its not comfortable. He will not go in it without serious protest. I dont want to buy another buggy at this late stage.

I know he gets tired easily, but this happens every day on the way to/from school when I have to take DD who is 5. He is 10x worse after nursery in the afternoons.

I'm finding it sooo stressful. I do the "ok DS we'll go without you", and I start to walk away and he just ignores me or runs onto the road. I end up having to carry him, which he hates cos I say " Come on then DS, I'll carry you like a baby" But he is too heavy to carry anything more than a couple of yards, And I often have DD to consider too (she gets cross with me because DS gets all of my attention)

I got him a like-a-bike to try and solve this problem, but he is too small for it just yet. He needs to grow a couple more inches in height.

I just refuse to drive him everywhere, parking at school and nursery is a nightmare. I am cross, exhusted and thoroughly bad tempered with both kids.

Can anyone help me?

Oh I also meant to say that it is not the kicking and screaming type of tantrum, its the totally collapsing, refusing to walk or move type.

Thanks

A scooter? Or does he rush off too fast? I sympathise - I have to do the school run with dd2 (3.3) and it's not much fun. She is still bribed in to the buggy sometimes, but she does look a bit bit for it. When she's in a bad mood, or tired from pre-school I tend to drive the car up, even though it is less than half a mile Blush

Run thanks for the sympathy, we probably live even closer than that. Its literally a 10 minute walk, but accross several roads, which can be busy at school times.

I hate having to bribe him/threaten him all the time. Cos that doesnt really work either, well even then maybe for a couple of minutes at the least.

Do you know someone else in the same position who you could leave ds with while you pick up their older one or vice versa? Could you collect him from nursery after the school run?
How about reward charts etc - does that interest him enough to make a difference?

(I'm dreading it even more come next Sept as dd2 will actually be at school - Aug b'day. She's going to be ridiculously tired and so doubly annoying about the whole thing! Can't really stick a school age child in a buggy, can I?)
