7mo won't stay still to have nappy changed

7mo DD will not lie still on her changing mat. She rolls over and tries to crawl away, and cries when I keep putting her back on her back. I can cope when it's just a wet nappy, but I just changed a horrific pooey nappy and it took about 20mins, half a pack of wipes, and I had to change all her clothes afterwards and burn disinfect the entire changing mat. Seriously, poo trailed everywhere.

Does anyone have any tricks or advice, or will she grow out of this? I'm not sure I can do this every day.

I hear you, it is a nightmare. I've tried eveything and I have to rotate what I do and think of new things every few days to keep DS amused... singing a specific song (he likes Beyonce Single Ladies at the moment and wind the bobbin up)... baby wipe up my nose (solves another problem too), hooded towel on my head, toy in my mouth, something he can't ususally have to play with (remote control, hand cream tube, a nappy, a baby wipe etc). Reluctant to buy the bunny changer that straps him in as I'm hoping it is a phase.. I'll be looking for other MNs advice on here too. Good Luck...

dd was (and is) still like this.
I give her something to hold that she usually is not allowed to play with and then I do it as quick as possible...

Sounds silly but everything ready in advance. Also try using flannels instead of wet wipes - they clean up the poo a lot faster and cleaner. I hate wet wipes!

Also give her something to play with - at the moment, I give DS a pair of sunglasses which he loves.

My DS is a real wriggler - I do say "no" when he tries to roll away. Doesn't always work though! He's 1 and it hasn't got better. Sorry!

Either give her something to hold or use one arm to pin her down along her chest and tummy and hold her legs up and the other to clean her bum. She won't like it, will probably cry but it won't hurt her so long as you only use just enough pressure but be as quick as you can and it will all be over in a matter of minutes.

I think there's 2 trains of thought on this one -

  1. distract - keep something interesting/forbidden handy and only let them play with it during changing times
  1. pin them down - if you do the change on the floor you can get most of the squirming child tucked under your left elbow while keeping both hands available. Ignore all protests and just focus on getting through it as rapidly as possible!

2 techniques worth a try.

Have changing mat on the floor. You sit to the side of the mat and use the leg on the side of your body that is nearest their head to put over them to pin the baby down.
Then qucikly change nappy whilst using the leg to hold them down (gently).

The one I use. Lie baby acorss your lap whilst you sit on a sofa or other chair. NO mat required. Use one hand to hold both feet and lift bottom off of you leg. Quickly remove nappy and wipe down. Replace with clean nappy. Down. To begin with you can end up with some on your leg but with practice it is the easist way to change nappies I find.

Both methods require all items to be ready to go next to you!

Get a rabbitts mat (on-line) they have a harness so you can strap them in. This saved me from going insane with my DD.

This would be one of my must have items!!!

DD did this at 7 months. Then stopped. Doing it again now at 13 months and a lot quicker at moving around the changing table! I have all my stuff ready - nappy already to put under her and wipes and cream beside it. Then I have a million and one toys beside ready to throw at her! If that still doesn't work, and she's kneeling up i put the nappy on her that way!!! Definitely not put on as well as the normal way but at least it's done!
