Tantrums at 5.4 years

DS has started to throw tantrums again - and I mean real throw yourself on the floor and kick style tantrums.

Usually when he can't or doesn't get his own way or win a game

eg: playing football with boy in road, he kicked it over his head - my boy he's cheating - tantrum ensued resulting in I don't want to play and i want my ball back _ first time in my life I have EVER heard a child say it's my ball and I don't want to play type comment

He's an intelligent boy, can be reasoned with usually but for some reason he's reverted in the last couple of months - is this a phase ?????

Has he just started school?

Shades1 · 14/09/2005 10:13

No, he's been in full time nursery since he was 4 months old, started in reception September 2004, and has just gone into year one. The Tantrums seemed to flare up again during summer holidays

Shades1 have ds1 the same age and I too have found that for a pretty intelligent boy he can really throw some wobblers lately. He too is in Year 1 and gets really tearful about certain things and angry if he can't do something. His best friend at school is a little bit like that and ds seems to have picked up alot of his traits.
I also think that they are worse when he is tired and sometimes because he is the oldest sibling I tend to forget that he is only 5 and sometimes I expect more "adult" behaviour from him now he is at school.
Someone has told me that it does get better when they get to 6 or 7. Sorry no solutions but I am there with you on everything.

My 6 yr old still has whopping tantrums just like this! He has also just gone into Yr1 - from experience with ds1, this is a big move. He was more academic than ds2 and still struggled for the first few weeks as everything is much more structured and there is much less time for play. It's bound to affect their behaviour. When ds2 does this, we calmly put him in his room for 5 mins to calm down and this usually does the trick - he also got a punchball for his birthday which helps!!!!

Agree Andif ds1 now doesn't like school he tells me, but he seems to be a really popular boy and I think it is purely more structured than Reception and he has to work now. And I think that can tire them out mentally as well as physically.

Don't know whether it's just getting used to it or going to bed earlier has helped but my 5 year old seems to have got over the scarey behaviour of the past 2 months.

It's alright for you lot I get it in stereo

My DS was 5 in July and still has a major problem with sulking and tantrums! Thank goodness someone elses ds does it too! Like your DS mine has been in full time nursery since baby and has just gone up to year 1! I really think and hope its just another phase they go through! Really have to stop myself making excuses for him and i feel that as long as im consistant with him he will pull thorugh this phase like he has done all the others!
