Strange crawling technique - should I be concerned?

DS2, 9m has recently started crawling but doesn't so much crawl as scooch around on his bottom, propelling himself off his right foot and leaving his left tucked under him, still in the position it would be if he is sat still. I know there are lots of different techniques babies use to get around but should I be worried about motor delay because two legs are doing different things? He was IUGR (still tiny)and also still doesn't roll from back to front. I have also heard links between unusual crawling and ADHD? Other two DC's used classic crawling technique so this is new for me! Can anyone reassure me or let me know if they think I should get some professional advice?

TIA

Sounds pretty normal to me. I think my neice did this and is totally normal.

Fiddledee · 22/10/2010 08:29

Both my kids do it, didn't walk particularly early but crawled late too. Nothing to be concerned about, just other people sniggering about how "weirdly" you child crawls

Tee2072 · 22/10/2010 08:30

That's how my son crawled. Well, until this past week when he went from that, to 'toddler drunken walk', to walking normally in about 3 days.

He's 16 months.

As soon as any baby finds a way to get that toy they will develop it and do it until they find a better new way. It's just that the most common one they first discover is crawling, nothing wrong with discovering a different way!

my eldest bum shuffled. This was because he had a paralysed arm and couldn't crawl.

He got on his feet and walked a few days around his first birthday.

one of them walked a few days before their first birthday and the other walked a few days after their first birthday and god help me I cannot remember which is which Blush

anyway, bum shuffling is quite common and nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reassurance, I just worry about everything with DS2 in a way I didn't with the others Blush.

I wouldn't worry about this at all, to be honest we're all built slightly differently anyway, if you ever watch people playing sports for example, there are always lots of different techniques.

At the end of the day, it gets from A to B :)

My dd did this. She's now 4yrs old and is absolutely fine.

nocake · 22/10/2010 12:37

My mum tells me that I used to bum shuffle. I didn't bother with crawling and just shuffled around until I was able to walk. It hasn't done me any harm Smile

asouthwoldmummy · 22/10/2010 12:48

I wouldn't worry at all, my DS used to shuffle along on his belly rather than crawl. My MIL assumed there was something wrong as he didn't crawl 'normally', but when I asked the HV she said it's actually quite common for them not to use hands and knees.

The fact that he is getting about is more important than how he does it.

Boys2mam · 22/10/2010 20:32

My nephew was 6 wks prem and had never crawled a day in his 21 mths. His preferreed method of transport was bum-shuffling (super-cute), he just decided walking was for him around August and hasn't looked back since.

A friends DS still "swims" round their living room at 1yr +....

....they really do have their own timetable.

GertrudetheDog · 22/10/2010 20:49

DS2 scooched along like that and now at 14 months walks perfectly normally. He didn't roll either btw.Smile

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/10/2010 21:00

DD is the niece of Wigeon Smile and she did move around in a really weird way. Two hands on the floor and with one leg in front and one behind. I do wish I had taken video footage of it as it was bizarre but very fast.

She started moving around 10.5 months and then walked at 15 months. DS crawled in a normal way at 8.5 months and also walked at 15 months.

DD also didn't roll at all until about 11.5 months. Whereas DS (older) did at about 4.5 months. Your DS2 sounds fine to me :)

mamadiva · 23/10/2010 21:11

All babies have their own unique way of crawling, have you ever watched all the newly crawling babies ata toddler group? Tis like watching Monty Pythons Ministry of Funny walks :o

DS never actually crawled until he could walk but he did drag himself around (literally) using his elbows, a bit like a commando under net kind of thing LOL

mamadiva · 23/10/2010 21:13

Meant to say DS did the commando crawl from around 7 months until he walked and crawled Hmm at 14 months.

mathanxiety · 23/10/2010 21:16

DD1 never even scooted, and never crawled; I had her in a walker a lot indoors as there was a horrible mouse problem where we lived and I had traps everywhere. The mice would romp around in broad daylight. She just stood up and walked one day (and we moved). DD2 scooted just like this. I think she just liked to see where she was going and be able to look around as she travelled. No problems as a result. She never crawled 'properly'. Walked at about 12 mos. The rest crawled.

There was some concern when my oldest DCs were young, in the early 90s, that babies who didn't crawl wouldn't be able to read and would have other problems. The general idea here, but so far DD1 and DD2 have disproved every single aspect of that hypothesis. They learned to read early, and excelled at school, had no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't worry in the least.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 24/10/2010 16:55

My DD, at 8 months, did a strange belly shuffle like she was doing the worm manoevure!

She crawled properly on hands and knees at about 11 months and was walking at 12/13months.

What sort of flooring do you have? DD bum-shuffled at her foster family's house where all of the downstairs was laminate or tiled. When she moved in with us she found bum-shuffling much less effective because we had carpet everywhere except kitchen and bathrooms so she started crawling for a few weeks until she walked.
