considering giving up potty training

Have been trying to toilet train 3.3 ds 1 for ten days now - he has had pants on every day apart from an afternoon at a birthday party when I put on pull ups, however he is still not asking or telling me he is needing to go. Not once has he tried to go by himself -I always take him. If I leave it to him then there are just accidents. He will tell me when he has done it but doesn't seem to know when he is needing. I spoke to health visitor and she was of the view that if he aint telling or trying by himself then he isn't ready. also that it would be counter productive to keep pushing it if he isn't interested as the boredom threshold is so low! What if he is just being a stubborn 3 yr old boy that just can't be bothered? He does pee when I take him to the toilet but taking him every hour is wearing for him and me. am going back to work soon as well and was hoping to have this sorted beforehand. Any ideas ladies?

If he is going when u take him then that suggests he has some control over it. I'd keep up what u r doing. Keep taking him regularly to prevent accidents. I'm sure he'll get the hang of it soon.

I'm sorry it's not working, my DS is just over 3 1/2 years and we started when he was 2 1/2, we are still working on it. For the first 6 months a day out meant taking at least 5 changes of trousers and pants. After awhile I started to notice the signs, ie a squirming, a funny posture. So he was feeling it and trying to hold it in, but still wasn't saying anything. After this, he started to go to the potty on his own, but it was still very last minute and if he wasn't right next to the potty he would have an accident.

However, we now have issues with chronic constipation, whether this is related to the unsuccessful start to the potty training or not I have no idea.

When he does start getting the idea but doesn't 'quite' make it, what I found helped was plastic lined pants from Mothercare. The small accidents would be contained in the pants but we didn't have to change the trousers every time - but unlike nappies doesn't allow him to get 'really' wet.

We're still not there, but we are getting there. It does get better, but you do need to make sure your childcare is very sympathetic and helpful. DS's current nursery is very supportive, his previous nursery wasn't really.
