oops, when dd1 was 2 she knew all the letters of the alphabet. We had those foam ones that stick on the tiles at bathtime and she could identify them all. She is now 8, above average intelligence but not a genius IYSWIM. I was told at the time that it was fairly unusual, but my friend's dd (same age) was just the same so for ages I thought it was just normal!

hi oops
I posted something similair last week about my 22mths old. Out of nowhere last week he started counting to 10 and recognising the numbers. He this week if i have say 3 of something has started to say 3 etc. He is also recognising letters. I was surprised as I have never done any of that type of thing with him and he doesnt go to nursery etc...hes just like a little sponge at the minute..lol Hv did his 2 yrs check and said he was doing somethings she wouldnt expect but I suppose what he does now is no indication of what he will do in 10 yrs time..lol

that's how dd1 learnt to read, dior - by the age of five she was off the reading scale, and now she's the only child in school who doesn't get spelling homework!

ds is doing well, oops - although he has decided sleeping is for wimps tonight . Nips have settled down great - toe-curling is over!

I think in dd1's case, a combination of natural ability, huge concentration span and internal motivation meant that she was an early and prolific reader. We didn't push her but did facilitate it. She is far more interested in maths these days but still reads two or three novel length books per week.

Miaou · 12/09/2005 22:39

dd1 was 4.5 when she learnt (at nursery) and she was ready for it then - don't think she would have managed before then.

Even my three year old doesn't count to 22 and doesn't really recognise numbers but he has started to add up. Had 3 of something and said 'if we get two more then we'll have five' to his sister - I was amazed! Your ds sounds very clever! My dd is 2 (just) and can only count to three but she can say sentences of 5 or 6 words so I suppose they're all different.

ah you see this is the flipside with dd1. She has some social problems, is incredibly shy and finds it hard to interact with others. just like her parents!!!

Lonelymum · 12/09/2005 22:50

My ds3 is 2.6 and he love pointing out every single plane or helicopter which passes over head and as we live quite near to a small airport, are within a flying zone for military jets and must be in the flight path for trans Atlantic flights that make about one every half an hour. His dad can identify all sorts of planes and always gets the kids to look at them when they pass over, so I suppose it is only to be expected.

I love that ds is interested in numbers at the moment. It makes supermarket shopping fly by, except when he HAS to queue in a particular line "because 4 is my favourite number mummy".

We had a book of city signs out of the library and he now points to every single EXIT sign, and asks if it's an emergency one.
