Ds will not keep his nappy on no matter what- frustrating!

My ds is 21 months old and for the past month or so has had a habit of taking off all of his clothes and removing his nappy. I realise this is just part of him gaining his independance but it has got to the point now where he won't keep his nappy on for more than a few minutes! Any ideas why, or tips on managing this at all?

DS starting doing the same around this age. Do you think your son may be wanting to try and start using potty or toilet?

I'm not sure. He tells me when he has done a poo in his nappy, and points to the toilet and says 'wee wee' as he knows that this where myself and dh go! However I'm not sure whether it would be a good idea to start training before Christmas as we have a trip away mid november and my parents are visiting for Christmas, so I don't know whether it might be a bit stressful for him? His birthday is 23rd December. He's my first child btw so I have no experience of potty training!

It sounds like he is becoming aware of needing the toilet etc and perhaps this is part of the reason he is starting to not want a nappy on.

As for the timing of potty training sometimes you have to go with what when the child is ready IMO. Both DS and DD (5 and 2 1/2) started using potty just before we went on holiday. While this was inconvenient for us it was the right time for them. Obviously you know your own circumstances and it has to be right for you as it will be you that has to mop up!!

Have you tried having a potty/toilet seat on the toilet and offering him the toilet on a regular basis? He may sit on it a few times before going to the loo but it is all a step in the right direction.

You could also see if he wants to wear pants or nothing while in the house to minimise washing etc.

Good luck

My son was a bit older, 26 months, and I had planned a summer of potty training, not a spring - he had other ideas. I bought loads of pants and a portable potty and if he said wee wee (even in the middle of the street) I'd whip out the potty.

hello I had this with my dd at about the same age esp at night which was really annoying as it meant lots of wet beds waking up etc. My ingenious solution was to buy the biggest baby vests I could find the ones that fasten underneath and it worked in that it made the logistics much tricker!!! You can get those baby vests for ages 2-3 in mothercare. Would def also think about potty training as will be eaiser in the long run!!!

Dd2 (2.1) takes her nappy off at bedtime. I put it on backwards, she's not figured that one out yet!

I had to use sellotape to keep dd3's nappy on at bedtimes. We used to cut her out of the nappy each morning.
