Screams so much he can't catch his breath

Hi guys when I change my almost 8 week old baby boys nappy he screams so much his face goes a deep shade of red and he holds onto the scream until he can't breathe. Usually I have to gently blow into his face to make him take a breath and afterwards he goes very pale and lethargic and then almost flops with exhaustion in my arms. This is my first baby and I find this very distressing we don't have our 8 week check until next week. Is this normal or is there anything o should be doing instead when he does this?
TIA

Hi
This is quite normal, many babies scream and have terrible rages when having their nappies changed. U just need to try distraction techniques. Once mine was on bottles i used to try change him whilst feeding him, otherwise sings to him, change him under a toy arch, cbeebies, white noise, whatever works!

That sounds like breath holding. It's scary but not dangerous. Basically he's holding his breath until his oxygen level drops enough to relax him and then he begins to breath again. Just make sure you stay calm and reassuring when it happens. It's not deliberate and can make them feel pretty awful possibly with a headache.

You should mention it at the check but unless it becomes more complicated there is nothing to worry about and no treatment. Just make sure you warn anyone who looks after him that it may happen.

Try lifting his arms up over his head, for some children it can gently 'force' them to take a breath.
