Sounds like a stupid question but is it possible for a nearly 3 yr old to have TOO MUCH sleep? I'm a bit worried TBH...

Bear with me. DS 3 in December.

Mon-Wed he's at nursery. We wake him up about 7.45am, he has no nap in the day, and we usually put him to bed about 6.45pm. No problems with his sleep, unlike DD.

Lately (for the last 3 weeks) - a weird thing has been happening. Thurs-Sat he might go to bed a bit later...7.30pm, say. He's in his own room next to ours. He used to wake up and yell for us (still in a cot).
Now we don't hear anything.

This week, I went into his room Thurs morning at 10AM, and then he stirred.
I can't seem to get out of him if he's actually sleeping/chilling or whatever. His eyes were all puffy, like he's had too much sleep!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining since his sister has me up from 5.30am onwards so an extra few hours with just the one is lovely...but...I said to OH should we be concerned so on Sat OH went into him, but instead of waking him like I do, throw door open, 'Morning!' loudly, open curtains etc.. OH crept in at 9.45am (mainly to see if he was awake) - touched him lightly on the arm and DS nearly had a friggin heart attack!

He doesn't sleep in the day at all and hasn't for months. We're OK with this and Thur-Sun make sure we have 'chill time' - if his sister is sleeping we cuddle on sofa and can relax OK.

So am I OK to think he must need this sleep then? I mean, if he's not shouting for us to come and get him then he's alright just left there then, is he?! It just feels weird.

And of course the real question is - if I didn't go in there at 10am, my god, how long would he lie there?!

could you set up a webcam/video camera to watch him - we got a cheap mini cctv camera form ebay for £30 which shows in DDs room on the tv - great for when not sure if she is asleep etc!

DD used to sleep for 14 hours a night plus a 3 hour nap until she was 2.6, and up until she was approximate 2 she wouldn't call for me in the morning, she'd just chill until I went in to get her (even when she picked up a tummy bug and threw up in her cot).

So, it's not unheard of. Is he healthy or are there other concerns for you?

My DS was like that especially at this time of year.

He seems to wake naturally when the sun comes up and it has been darker longer the last few weeks.

If he seems perfectly well in every other way then I would just be grateful.

Maybe it is a growth spurt... my DS(3.2) seems to need more sleep periodically and often it coincides with him going up a size in trousers (that sounds weird but you know what I mean)

And/or he could be fighting an infection... puffy eyes can mean conjunctivitis.

My DS sometimes goes through til 9.30am, maybe they are awake in the night but we just don't know about it.

my ds slept loads at this age
over 12 hrs a night plus long naps during the day

probably a grwoth spurt

SA (3 in Dec as well) has phases of sleeping in - 10.30 is his record, and on a sunday. Growth spurt? IIf he's ok in the day, lots of energy, eating plenty, I wouldn't worry , well I don't worry.

Enjoy it

Thanks guys. From all your responses I'm feeling pretty STOOPID about posting that. This isn't Net mums after all...;O

Am just so used (now) to his sister who sleeps loads less so was getting a bit freaked out by the spooky silence.

But as y'all said - he is healthy so I won't worry and will try to enjoy it. Sure if he wants me, he'll yell. Won't be going as far as to install a webcam, but I just wish I kactually knew if he was sleeping or chilling.
Ah well. Think I might have to 'cap it' at 10am though or else that would feel too weird.

And like you said, who's to say he's not awake int he middle of the night plotting?!
