Still mad with myself and DS

On Friday night my ds said he had a headache after school, he looked pale and was hot. I got the calpol out and gave him 10ml, my 17 month old daughter was screaming at my legs, so put the bottle back on the kitchen top, turned round and picked her up. As I turned back to ds, he was just putting down the calpol bottle and had drunk some more! He had a big grin on his face, until he saw how horrified dp and I were.

We went to GP and they send us to hospital where they did a blood test and the levels in his body were nil and sent us home.

He now absolutely realises how dangerous this was, and I just never expected him to do this, he is almost 6. I still cant get it out of my head and have a sick feeling constantly. Its shocked me how easily these things can happen.

I don't really know why Im posting but I thought maybe it would help if I talk to you lovely ladies about it.

Thanks

Try not to worry charlieboo - these things happen and it's good that you got your dh checked out otherwise you'd have been worrying for ages.

We all make mistakes like that. Do you know he had actually drunk it then?

As I picked dd up and turned back to him he was just putting it down and had pink on his lips. He had nothing in his blood so must have just touched it to his lips, but we were not to know that.

Thanks for the reply, just feel rubbish and worry what they must think!!!

it was fine, he was fine .. no damage done.

yes it could have been worse but it wasn't.

life is full of moments like this - it is best not to dwell

All parents have near misses - the fact is you're all ok (if shaken) - and lesson learnt

MaudOHara · 18/10/2010 12:47

Meant to say don't beat yourself up

I think as well, once you have a second child, you automatically treat the oldest as though they were far more grown up and expect the younger child to do all of the naughty things the eldest used to do Smile.

Thanks all for replies, I agree with you Lucie, I never dreamt my ds would nab it off the side while my back was turned, he's never done anything like that before. I assumed he knew better... You know what they say about assumptions!!!
