8 month old baby not babbling - time to worry?

First time posting here, so please be gentle!

My DS turned 8 months a couple of days ago. He started crawling at 7 months exactly, and a couple of weeks later began pulling up on things (he also looks like he might be getting ready to start cruising soon).

However, no 'proper' babble as yet. He does say things like 'ah-goo' and 'ah-ba', and he's quite vocal generally (e.g. loads of 'oooh', 'eeeh' and 'aah'), but no doubling up of sounds, e.g. ma ma ma ma, da da da da.

He had his 8 month development check and have been called back in 6 weeks time for a check up relating to the lack of babble.

He doesn't really do back and forth stuff either, e.g. I say 'oooh' and he repeats 'oooh'. I have had little 'conversations' with him but he doesn't appear to be trying to imitate me at all. He doesn't clap or wave yet.

Anybody else have any experience of this who might be able to put my mind at rest? Or is this really unusual?

yes, dd2 didn't babble at 8 months - it was noted at her 8 month check. A few months later, she started babbling, at 2 years old she was way ahead of her peers with her speech.

So don't worry yet.

I wouldn't worry at this time. Plus if you say 'ooh' and he says 'ooh', he is imitating you.

ds didnt babble until 10m, after he'd started walking, he was talking in short sentences by 13m though.

oh, ds didnt wave or clap until v late either

Pinkjenny - sorry, my message was poorly worded. He doesn't say 'ooh' back to me (I used that as an example of what he doesn't do). He usually just laughs at me!

Thanks for the replies - reassurance much appreciated.
