6mo no interest in sitting

Ds was 6weeks early but he has no interest in sitting up, he tries to stand and walk but no sitting. He can't roll either. He's a lovely little boy and I'm not worried, just don't know if theres more I can be doing for him to encourage him or if it's just one of those things.
I think the main reason I'm worried is that he spends a lot of time in arms or on me, his dad and my mum have started making very pointed comments about me holding him back. Do people think this is the case? What should I be doing?
Thanks

My 7 month old DD just rolled yesterday for first time (v proud). She is nowhere near sitting yet. My DS didn't sit till 8 months. If he was near one and not sitting I would get concerned, but 6 months is still very little.

There is no way you can hold a baby back by cuddling too much. "Quick stop cuddling and loving that baby".

Thats what I thought but my mum keeps informing me of everyone elses babies and how they're crawling Hmm and how he is very behind. He's just not interested in sitting up

Children all develop at their own pace, tell your mum to keep her beak out and her unhelpful comments to herself!

My DS1 sat at 5 months, crawled at 8 1/2 months, and walked a few days before his 1st birthday.

DS2 kept trying to stand from just several months old, learned to commando drawl about 7 months, sat at about 8 - 9 months, crawled properly about 10 months and didn't walk until nearly 14 months.

I know some babies who walked at 9 months, and others that didn't walk until about 15/16 months. Who cares as long as they follow some sort of developmental path at a stready rate?!

I really don't think you are holding him back by holding him!! Someone said the same to me that my ds is not crawling because I carry him round too much, which I don't actually carry him round all the time anyway.. but they just do things @ their own time. 6 months is definitely not late to be not sitting, especially as he was 6 weeks early so would be something like 4.5 months corrected, which i dont think hardly any babies at all sit @ that age. Sounds like he is doing fine really, if you want to encourage him could try him in one of those supporting cushions to sit him up in that, or some people like those bumbo chair things (never used them myself so dont know if they are good but just a suggestion). Will he sit supported like on the sofa or something? if so I really wouldnt see any problem at all.

Oh really don't worry - all the NCT people I know were really pleased when their babies dutifully sat up by 6 months. DS didn't sit at all until 8mo.

Perhaps that was because he was rolling all over the place and had no intention of sitting still :)

They were all very concerned about DS though, which made me Hmm Off you fuck with your missplaced sympathy, NCT wenches! Grin

phew.. sorry, it's been a bad day.

No, you can't hold him back by holding on to him - enjoy it while you still can, before long he'll be off and you'll have to catch him for a cuddle :)

honestly its fine. all my friends' babies were positvely doing (in my mind) back flips before my dd ever considered rolling or sitting or standing. she even totally freaked us out ( as new parents )after making lots of gurgels and random noises until about three months by going completley silent - our HV smartly pointed out that once they know how to do one thing thay might stop it all together and concentrate on some thingelse - and it was true : now she never shuts up Smile

now she strings senctence together at 23 months - she still can't jump ( though we find it just so fumny when she tries !)

what you gotta remember is that no matter what: at about four\ five they are all walking, running and speaking it doesn't really matter in which order it occurs.

Unforunately a few of my mums friends have become grandmas at the same time. They keep meeting up and comparing our babies! Who's sitting/ babbling/ crawling Angry I'm a late bloomer though so it doesn't matter that ds is loosing Grin
I think he's doing well so glad to hear from you lot, the comments I've been getting you'd think he'd still be being carried around and on the breast at 11!

My DS is just 6 months and was 4 weeks early - He is just starting to stay sitting for more than a few seconds before falling over, but has shown no interest at all in rolling/crawling etc - My DD didn't sit or roll until 8 months, but then went on to crawl, stand and walk by 11 months...

I would be responding to all comments with 'well he was 6 weeks early so should really only be 4.5 months old!

Bumpsadaisie · 13/10/2010 19:01

As others have said - 6 months is early to average for non-premmies.

eclipse · 13/10/2010 20:02

Mine was not prem and he sat up at 8 months and walked at 8 months. Can't remember when he rolled but I think it was late. First crawled at about 18 months and couldn't even get up to standing, despite being able to walk so early, until 14 months. Weird baby. Now 5 years old and ordinary (lovely to me) in every way.

mrspear · 13/10/2010 20:07

To the op please please ignore your mum! Your baby was prem do not count his development age from birth but your due date. This holds true for size too. You can usually forget your due date when they hit 2. Remind your mum of this fact.

I speak as someone with a baby born 10 weeks early. My DS rolled before he sat up. Infact he is one tomorrow and he still does not sit straight up from lying on his back; he kind of rolls to one side and then sits.

Don't worry

dribbleface · 13/10/2010 20:23

My Ds was full term, didn't sit up till 8mths, sat like a little blob till 11mths, then learnt to crawl, pull up and walk in 4 weeks flat.

Honestly don't worry.

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 13/10/2010 20:59

It's so good to know, ds is still feeding like a newborn, all through the night so I'm exhausted and a bit :( tbh, so take every comment to heart.
I know he'll get there, he makes me proud every day.
