Remind me when children start taalking

My 20 month old can say "mam" but that's it I have been trying to encourage her to say more words but with no Luck....the silly thing is that i cant remember what my older two were doing at this age although my sin did take his sweet time and had development delays in a few areas which he is thankfully now ( nearly 4) catching up in.

So 20 months old should i be executing actual words yet?

I refuse to google because i learned with my son that googling " toddler development" is very likely to worry me even when things are going well!

it varies hugely, i have a friend whose daughter was sayinh words at 10/11 months! was amazing

i think ds1 said his first words at around 13 months, ds2 a LOT later- around 18m maybe for first word
ds3 is 16 months and doesn't say anything

Unwind · 11/10/2010 21:35

never google, and never rely on stuff you read on web forums

the person to speak to is your health visitor

jollyma · 11/10/2010 21:38

My ds is 19 months, he says mummy, daddy, no, cat and night night in a way non family members would understand and has about a dozen other words that only we understand. I think this is quite good for his age, most of his similar age buddies seem to have upto a dozen or so words.

LauraNorder · 11/10/2010 21:38

DD is 20 months and says loads. We seem to have a new word every few days - last one was "cuddle", todays was "Mr Tumble".

DS, on the other hand, didn't say anything much more than mama dada until he was quite a bit older. He is now 5 and doesn't stop talking.

I wouldn't worry, they all catch up in the end Smile

Dione · 11/10/2010 21:38

My DS was a bit of a late starter (by my family standards anyway). Couldn't even get him to say mum until he was close to 20months. Then it was "Hiya mummy" for about 4 weeks. I took him to the HV who told me not to worry. Then one day over breakfast he said "Don't want porridge. I want Weetabix." He hasn't shut up since.

Children take their own time, but if you are really worried go to your HV, don't google, it's not good for you.Smile

FairyMum · 11/10/2010 21:40

All mine were late starters. Didn't really say anything at all before well past 2 years. They are all chatterboxes now with a fairly advanced vocabularly.

katiepotatie · 11/10/2010 21:41

My dd was saying many words at 12 months, and was having conversations at 16 months. Ds is now 17 months and is saying few words, although is starting to repeat what he hears now, but no way near as clearly as dd at the same age.(she was walking far earlier than him too)
Dc are all different and I have stopped trying to compare them now.
If you are really worried talk to your HV.

Lynli · 11/10/2010 21:44

When they want to.

DD1 long sentences at 1 year.

DD2 nothing for two years, and then said "I want a drink and I want it now".

My DGD was saying very little at 2yrs 3 months, but started playgroup a few weeks ago and now you can't shut her up.

EdgarAllInPink · 11/10/2010 21:44

i think at 20 months DD said either 'da' or 'hoo' to everything, da = parent, 'hoo' = four legged animal. DS is saying lots of words at 20 months, bless him.

mummycreepynora · 11/10/2010 21:44

varies hugely.... dd started at 9 months saying mumum, dadad, yes, no - and by 20 months was starting to string words together (sentences of up to 5/6 words at once) but I believe she was pretty advanced, DS on the other hand is 9 months and says dadad in a babble way, but thats it and no signs of anything happening any time soon.

fernie3 · 11/10/2010 21:44

I might go and see the health visitor, I was supposed to go back in a month or so about her leg as she only just started walking and one of her legs points inwards.
I mark her sound really strange don't I ! She's lovely really Grin

oh..DD is 3 now and talks in single words, (eg, Daddy Happy, Mummy Happy. Floor BROKEN.)

My HV said not to worry until DD had been at nursery a few months, then is she still isn't talking in sentences, ask for a salt referral.

undercovamutha · 11/10/2010 21:49

DD was speaking in sentences by 18mo.
DS is 19mo and is virtually mute! He can say 'what's that', 'mama' and 'hi'. He can also makes some animal noises Smile.
