How to get him to lie on his back?

My 3week old is a tummy sleeper, took me a couple of days to figure it out but that's how he prefers to sleep.

MW raised her eye's a little bit when she saw him napping on his tummy but said he was obviously positioned like that in the womb and that's why he prefers it and that tummy sleepers tend to have really good neck strength from very early on. (proving very true at the moment)

All good so far,

But then she said that he has to get used to lying on his back not his tummy and to try and put him down to "play" or nap on his back periodically throughout the day.

Only problem is he screams every time I try to lie him on his back.

Anyone had any experience of this. Do I need to
Perservere?

He's very much able to move his own head from side to side and pushing himself up on his arms if I lie him on his playmat so I feel I'm making him uncomfortable for no reason?

What do you think?

i'd let him#
ds1 was happy as larry on his back

ds2 would never sleep on his back - in his case due to reflux but some wee ones just do not like it.

if you are worried wrt sids, get a movement monitor and learn what to do if it goes off.

he might grow out of this, but i'd go with it.

My lo was a tummy sleeper as of about 8 weeks. MW moaned about it, but that's how he slept. He's 8 months now, and every night when I got into his room, despite placing him on his back, he is belly down with his knees up and bum in his air. My friend from birth has put both of her little ones down belly down and they're fine. But of course the risk of overheating and cot death is higher, especially when they can't turn themselves over yet.

not his air, the air...

That's re-assuring thanks.

I'm not too bothered about a movement monitor.

During the day he naps in his basket in the living room and we co-sleep at night so I'm always near him.

ingodwetrust knee's up, bum in the air.... Yep that sounds about right. Lol.

so long as he can turn his head to the side under his own steam then I wouldn't be too fussed about making him lie on his back.

Yes, thesugarplumfairy. He's absolutely fine moving his head side to side.

Just so different to ds1 who used to sob into the carpet until 5months old if I put him on his tummy and not even attempt to move.

Thanks again. Think I'll just leave it for now. I'm sure he'll be ok on his back one day when he wants to see more or something.
