One year old and self - feeding

When the health visitor advised me not to spoonfeed my son but to allow him to pick the food up with his hands and self feed, it threw everything into chaos as he was in a routine of being fed. We bought a highchair with a divider tray, rather than using a plate and he eventually got the hang of it and is now pretty good at feeding himself the majority of meals. However he has recently started at nursery and they mentioned that he wasn't eating very well. When I picked him up last time I noticed that they sit the children in play-ring type seats and feed them from a spoon at mealtimes and I assume that this is what is causing him problems. They do not seem to use highchairs at all. He is not yet able to use a spoon for himself and I don't know what to do for the best. Should I return to spoon-feeding him which at his age may confuse him and make him a little bit lazy as he has been used to doing it himself (albeit messily) or plug on regardless with the self - feeding when he is being fed in a completely different way at nursery and hope he doesn't get confused?

Is it worth talking to the nursery about how the children are fed? It seems a little bizarre that the children are ONLY fed in this way and there's no more 'formal' option for those more able to feed themselves! Explain that you think this might be what the problem is and that you find he doesn't eat so well if spoon fed. Also that he may be a bit messy when finger feeding himself, but that you're happy with that and happy that he's eating enough this way.

Maybe they just need it pointed out!
