ok, i have a 5 month old and starting to notice strange things,

  1. she holds her head to one side (left)all the time, have looked into this and think maybe Torticollis?
  2. left buttock is smaller that the other
  3. left thigh is less chubby than the right
  4. Right leg is much more active
  5. she was wedged under my ribs in utro and was born by c section with the left side of her jaw pushed over - although this corrected itself it is still slightly wonky and jaw line in not right.
  6. her head is a little large - it has steady growth but is 2 centiles above her weight centile.

When I read this back I feel quite worried, something is clearly not right? Have a doctors appointment for tuesday next week but any info would be helpful please.

Bumping for you. I have no knowledge of any of the symptoms you describe but hopefully someone else will. Can you not pester your GP for an earlier appointment so at least you can get some answers sooner.

xx

I'm sorry I have no experience of the things you mention, but might a cranial osteopath be able to help? It might be worth finding one locally to take a look - IMO they're excellent at helping to rectify symptoms of a difficult birth etc.

Good luck...x

My DD was squished to one side when in the womb and had a clicky hip as a result.
Reading your description of her legs and buttocks and the fact that her right leg is much more active I would definitely get them to check her hips out with an ultrasound scan. Google DDH (Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip) and it will give you some tell tale signs to look out for.

Let us know how you get on and good luck!

Hi there. Couldn't not answer but I had a breech baby born at 34/5 weeks and she was pushed right up against my ribs and had a ridge in her head (I used to call her bean head) at the side. She also had a clicky hip (which we had ultrasound for a few times but she's not fine and never needed a brace) and her legs were slightly uneven, even the folds slightly. She was also small at 5 lbs (and has doggedly stayed at the 10-11 centile)

You'd be surprised how they unbend and plump out over 12 months. You would never ever know she'd been cramped in the womb.

But do see your paed (I had a paed from birth as I had my daughter overseas and an orthopaedic doctor I saw every 3 months)

otchayaniye · 06/10/2010 11:14

Oh, and this is fixable. Worst case she may need a brace, best case it will just right itself. I was advised to put her in double nappies and babywear her in front cross carries to keep her hips open.

otchayaniye · 06/10/2010 11:17

I meant she's 'NOW fine'

I would urge you to see a paed and get a appt with an ortho NOT a cranial osteo.

ragged · 06/10/2010 11:18

My strong gut feeling is that you're overthinking, OP.

Talk to your HV in first case; their job is to look for problems. If she can't see signs of a problem, I doubt very much there is one.

Around that age, DS1 had some of the features (1, 4, 6, partly 5) you mention. He's 10yo now and no problems.

otchayaniye · 06/10/2010 11:23

ragged, I have to STRONGLY disagree. I am not fanning anxiety, because ultimately this poss clicky hip thing (the unevenness of the legs points to it) is treatable.

But at the same time do not ignore it. A HV may not be the best point of call for this and a trip to the GP and poss referall to someone qualified in infant orthopedics is sensible, if only to rule it out.

There is nothing scary about a clicky hip but it would be eminently wise to get it checked out in case there is a need for intervention. A HV and certainly NOT a cranial osteo quack are probably not qualified diagnosticians.

OP, please don't worry. I did and I had nothing to worry about. My paed was overcautious and it righted itself. But I had peace of mind and great advice from the ortho.

Will be interesting if OP can keep us updated.

thanks for all your comments, I too will be interested to see what the doctor has to say...could have got an earlier appointment but want to see a specific doctor who I trust and feel comfortable talking to. Our health visiting team are not fantastic and have in my opinion not been overly helpful so I am reluctant to trust them with this issue as if there are any problems I want them to be addressed sooner rather than later.

baby was breach and was wedged firmly under my ribs, which is why her face was squashed to one side, she had hip scans at about 2-3 months as this is standard with a breach baby being delivered by c section so as far as i am aware there is no problem there.

I have taken on board the whole cranial osteo subject but to be honest its not the actual ailments i.e jaw alignment, small buttock, that worry me at the minute, its the fact that when she is looked at as a whole, is there something very wrong, some type of syndrome. I hope I am over thinking and all is ok, I will repost after I have seen the doc.

Hi

you could also consider asking for a referral to an eye specialist. (orthoptist or ophthalmologist) occaisionally an eye muscle weakness can be the cause of a head turn or tilt.

whatsleep · 07/10/2010 09:51

thanks mclazy will look into that too
