My 2 year old is an absolute nightmare when I try to put him into the trolley seat. He arches his back and kicks and screams. I really could do with some advise on how to make this less tramatic for both me and him!Smile

My Ds is happy to stand in the main bit of trolley where you put shopping, he stands at the front of the trolley and directs me (or so he thinks!) around the supermarket

get it delivered

failing that, try him walking? i found mine was actually quite good at picking stuff for me

What do you normally do after/while he kicks and screams?

I'm afraid you need to deal with it like any other tantrum, ignore him and absolutely make sure he doesn't get his own way. So, no matter how much of an exhibition he makes he must go in and stay in the trolley, if that's what you said in the first place.

DS2 spent a whole shopping trip screaming once, but only the once. Once he gets the message that you won't give in, he'll stop.

I found that the breathing exercises they teach you for labour helped me to keep calm and tune out all the diapproving looks in such circumstances [grim]

springishere, sorry, but your post made me squirm. My sister still has the scars from when she tipped over a supermarket trolley when riding like that.

My dd does exactly the same, Im not very tall and she weighs a tonne, its soooo embarrassing, I get all hot and bothered trying to get her in, it's the same everytime we go, so what I do now is grab a trolley furthest away from the entrance, away from the herds of shoppers, when I get her sitting, then give her a banana to keep her quite (shes banana mad) for a minute or two! haha

I let my ds walk and 'help' me push the trolley. I then send him off to get things on the way past like the bread, milk etc. Keeps him interested although it does take us ages to get round the shop, he really enjoys it. Done it since just before he was 2, now 2.5

pigleychez · 04/10/2010 22:59

My DD has tried that on occasions too. I think shes learnt it doesnt wash! I too think you need to be firm and show it doesnt bother you (even though inside your secretly boiling over Grin )

Ignore any disapproving looks and if anyone comments I laugh and reply 'Dont you just love 2yr olds!' :) Usually shuts them up.

I have found distraction is a good tool. I ask DD what we should buy,how many etc. She likes to hold each item untill we get the next. She also likes to put things into the trolley but that usually means being thrown over her shoulder ( so pick your items carefully!) Also jobs like giving the assistant your credit/debit card at the end and the important job of holding the recipt. The attention is a winner with DD.

We also sometimes give her a treat of a Peppa Pig magazine if shes been a good girl lately. Get it first and reading it keeps her occupied round the shop.

Put a cushion in the bottom of the trolley and let him sit there, works for my DD. HOWEVER you need to watch like a hawk in case he stands up AND you will not get so much shopping in.

My 3 year old can sometimes be a nightmare when it comes to shopping, so much so that when I was pregnant last year I refuse to take her with me (which is okay if you have someone who can look after her!).
She is now much better now she has her little sister sat next to her, but failing that she likes to walk holding on to the trolley and is usually really well behaved. Either that or I result to bribery! A packet of Skips or Quavers usually works!
