late walker?

My dd is 13 months old. She has been crawling and pulling herself up since 8 months, and cruising aince 9 months. However she has not attempted to walk yet and only very recently started standing alone for a few seconds. She is very quick at crawling, can climb up and down stairs and also climbs on anything that stands still! She can also sit and scoot along on a ride-along toy very confidently.Although I know at her age there is no worry at the moment that she is not walking yet, but has anyone had a similar child and when did yours walk?

Isn't this normal? I thought 12-14 months was about average to take first steps?

Kelly1978 · 08/09/2005 11:22

yes, about 14 mnths. I think it is normal, when a child can get around easily wihtout needing to walk, there is less incentive for them to start.

expatinscotland · 08/09/2005 11:25

I didn't walk until I was 21 months old. I've been a lifelong athlete.

My DD didn't walk until 22 months.

Aero · 08/09/2005 11:25

Ds2 was 17.5 months before he finally got going - he's 20 months now and there's no stopping him. His big brother was 15mths and dd was 14.5mths, so no real rush to walk for any of mine!Nothing at all to worry about though.

ghosty · 08/09/2005 11:26

Definitely not a late walker. DS was 14 months which I was thought was about average and DD was 15 months.

compo · 08/09/2005 11:34

my ds isn't walking yet and he is 17 months. He loves cruising and is a very fast crawler so at the moent I just don't think he sees the point!

QueenOfQuotes · 08/09/2005 11:37

DS1 didn't walk until he was nearly 18 months.

And a little girl on my November 2003 antenatal club on Babyworld only started walking last month!!!

tottie218 · 08/09/2005 11:39

thanks compo

yes I think she is the same, since she can get around and do everything she wants to do, I don't think she feels the need to walk!!

DD started walking at 13 months. Think 12-15 is average really. Although i have heard of and have members of family who walked much later.
Don't fret pet

expatinscotland · 08/09/2005 11:43

Mine walked on her knees for months before she finally stood up.

tottie218 · 08/09/2005 11:43

thanks for all your replies

I know I should be patient and she will do it in her own time. Just fed-up of her wearing out her trousers at the knees!!

Yes, as I?ve posted elsewheer, 15 months is the mean (ie the average) for walking, the range is 9mo to 20 mo for NT children - ie walking at a year is early, tho often perceived as the norm. Don't worry

expatinscotland · 08/09/2005 11:56

I'm NT and was 21 months.

Keep in mind that if you have a bum shuffler, scooter or knee walker your child can walk later adn still be considering NT.

colditz · 08/09/2005 11:57

tottie buy her a pair of boy's jeans, they are a lot tougher!

bobbybob · 08/09/2005 19:20

15 months for ds, but then he didn't crawl until a year.

futurity · 08/09/2005 19:23

10 1/2 months for crawling..and 15 1/2 months for walking...yes he was the last out of my antenatal class and it drove me nuts but now he is 3 1/2 and you can't tell them apart!

clary · 08/09/2005 19:48

expat of course don't mean to suggest that not walkign until 21 months is necessarily significant. The important thing is progress, and bum shufflers especially are often later walkers.
I certainly know a number of NT children who walked even later than 20m.
It's just a guideline to be aware of I guess.
I often wonder where this "all babies walk at a year" notion has come from. Both my older two were well over 1yr (ds2 was another matter but then he's been in a hurry from birth )

HAPPYFACE · 18/09/2005 15:04

I HAVEN'T READ ALL THIS THREAD BUT WANTED TO KNOW IF IT IS NORMALISH FOR DS TO MAINLY PREFER STANDING ON HIS TIPTOES? HE DOES SOMETIMES PUT HIS FEET FLAT.
HV ASKED IF HAD WALKER OR DOOR BOUNCER, HE DID BUT NOT SINCE 9-10 MTHS WHEN HE BEGAN BUM SHUFFLING. HE IS 13 MTHS (BORN 37 WKS THOUGH) HE IS STILL ONLY CRUSING AROUND FURNITURE AND BUM SHUFFLES EVERYWHERE, HE CAN CRAWL BUT SELDOM DOES! THIS ALL SEEMS ODD TO US WHEN DD WAS WALKING ON HER 1ST B'DAY, AND NEVER STOOD ON TIPTOES!

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 15:08

DS only just started walking and still not amazingly well - he's 17mo. 14 months is average - some are a lot earlier, some, obviously, a lot later. He has been cruising and crawling for ages - he crawls really, really well - I think that's one reason he's not bothered walking till now. He could run, as long as he held onto the sofa, which I thought would make it harder!

Don't worry - perfectly normal.

HAPPYFACE · 18/09/2005 15:16

I'M MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE TIP-TOES THING RATHER THAN WALKING, HV SAID IF WAS STILL ON THEM WHEN HE IS IN SHOES AND WALKING PROPERLY THEN HE MAY NEED REFERAL TO PHISO OR SOMETHING.

chatee · 18/09/2005 15:26

can't help with the tiptoes but my ds only started walking at 16.5 months and my friends dd is still not and she's 17.5 months...they will do it in their own good time,
like teeth...friends dd has all 20(and has for a while)
ds only has 8 !!
the most important thing to do is encourage babe through play/ maybe try a leg massage so babe knows it has legs(iyswim??)

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 15:55

HF, hadn't read your post when I made mine, only the original one on the thread. Can't help with tiptoes either - although have read of it before on here.

Can you turn your CAPS off too please - it's shouting when you post like that online
