8 month old BCG ramifications

Hi, this is my first ever post after a few months of lurking so I hope this in the right place.

My 8 month old DS had his BCG today - our council policy is to ensure this is done before the age of one - and I'm not sure how it will affect him.

I remember my BCG being very painful for weeks, with a pus filled lump on my arm and I was 12 years old at the time so my understanding of what was happening was rather better.

Has anyone got any advice as to what will happen to him and what to do other than try and stop him from banging his arm? He's not crawling yet but is diving forward onto his front from a seated position on a regular basis so is bound to whack his arm all the time.

Thanks

Just the usual advice applies, do not pick it, do not put a plaster on it, there is nothing you can do to prevent the occassional knock. It may scab over/blister for quite a while. My DS2 had his at 6 weeks, he is now 5 months and it has not healed. I think DS1 only had a lump for a couple of months.

I also had BCG at 12 and remember my arm being very painful for ages.

Both my dd's have had BCG as newborns and although the injection site got a little sore it never was a bad as I remember mine being so hopefully your DS will be the same.

It does crust over and get a little sore looking after a few weeks but it never seemed to bother either of mine.

My DD had it at 8 months and it never crusted or even scarred. No lump, nothing.

Thanks for the info, looks like anything could happen! It's a small red mark right now so let's hope it doesn't change. He slept terribly for the two nights post-jab (not that he's the best sleeper anyway) and had an incredible thirst for his bottle too but last night the sleeping was better and milk consumption seemed to be more normal. Fingers crossed.
