Hi. I need some advice on how to help my dd (5yrs old) handle mean comments.
She told me last night at bathtime, that two of her "best friends" had said that she is hairy and it looks "ugly".

We are Indian and so naturally are more hairy then White or Chinese ( which is what these girls are).
In general these girls are nice but the comments do seem to effect dd. There was a day once when she wanted to wear her cardigan all day because she was trying to hide her arms even though it was hot.

So I need to reassure her that she is beautiful, smart, etc but she has to believe this. Any thoughts please.

why are some children sooo mean. I suggest you have a word with the class mistress. She should keep an eye on it. Just tell her to find some new friends as these are not 'best friends' to behave like that. and yes you keep on reassuring her. good luck

I too think you need to talk to her teacher. people come in all shapes sizes and levels of hairyness. We had a similar situation with our DD around the same age. She has an eye very similar to Madeleine McCann, one of her pupils is long rather than round. A couple of girls (isn't it always) thought it was funny to call her goat and baa at her. When I found out I spoke to her lovely teacher who had a little chat about differences.

I would also have a word with the teacher, not ness to reprimand the other girls, but rather so that she can incorporate different cultures, the differences between people, and what makes people special into her lesson plan.
I would make a point of pointing out all the things she does feel confidant about, like i love your long hair, you speak so nicely, you say so many kind things that make mommy so happy, you are so helpful, im such a lucky mom to have you. things like that that will build her confidence, so that when people do say mean things, and lets be honest, they do throughout life, she can recall on all the things that make her special, amazing, and very loved.
