Severe daily tantrums at 28 months

My twin boys have started having unbelievably bad tantrums on a daily basis - head banging the floor, biting, screaming like someone was sawing their legs off etc. They have recently dropped their lunchtime naps so this usually happens around 3pm when they are obviously very tired. They have also started to wake in the night which is adding to their exhaustion (there have been a few changes in our lives recently). So I know the reasons, but I need to know if anyone else is going through something similar and how to get through it! The headbanging is particularly distressing :(

It sounds like they probably still need their naps TBH. They are still very small. Perhaps they just need to be put down for a nap in separate rooms, so they don't disturb each other. They are waking at night because they are over tired.

Thanks 3littlefrogs. I think they still need their naps too and I like the idea of separate rooms. Thing is, the naps got phased out because they used to wake up after 45 minutes and were absolutely unbearable for an hour afterwards. And they wouldn't go to sleep until 9.30/10pm ... Feeling in between a rock and a hard place ...

It sounds like they are having problems self settling - hence the waking up after 45minutes. Have you tried white noise, or classical music on very low, black out blinds, winding down etc?

Mine still needed a good hour and a half at that age.

They need at least 12 - 14 hours sleep in 24.

They used to be really good at "chatting" to each other and then falling asleep at naptime all by themselves. I think I got a bit slack about settling them at naptime (while we do have a good nighttime routine). Thanks, I'll try all of the above!
