my 3y7m old dts can't pronounce 'L', unfortunate as one of them is called Leo which they pronounce 'yeyo'. Is this not a bit late to not be able to pronounce it?

Is this the only thing he can't pronounce? If he is having difficulties then see your HV as they can refer him to speech therapy before school starts. My nephew needed it as he couldn't pronounce certain vowels and only needed one or two sessions and some voice exercises and he learnt quite quick. Sorry if this sounds scary to you but you wouldn't have posted if you weren't concerned and as has no-one else had posted i thought i would share my sisters experience.
Alternatively you could just correct him every time and hope that works - good luck!

my 4y8m can't pronounce L either - he is currently having speech therapy for it
He has delayed speech and 3 months ago it would have been quicker to list the sounds he could pronounce rather than the ones he could - now it is just "L" and "th".

I would ask to be referred personally - I started the process in Dec 09, was told to go away for 6 months, went again in Apr 10, had an initial assessment in May 10 and he has just started sessions this month.
We have drop in SALT sessions in this area in surestart centres, that might be your first step. or the HV or their pre-school.

In respect to the L, he is having 4 sessions (1 per week) and at the end of that they will reassess. Either they think he will have got it by then, or he won't and they will leave it for 6-months.

Thanks for the replies and advice. Its actually both DTs (id boys) and I have thought about it but really need to observe if one or both have other speech problems. they are bi-lingual but 'L' is a sound in both languages (english and swiss-german) I was not sure if it is normal at this age (most of the kids of their age that I have to compare with don't speak English so diffiult for me to judge) or if it is time to try to get speech therapy. I've heard that it is better to get therapy earlier rather than later.

I really appreciate your replies, thanks!
