poor dd2 wet herself today...I'm worried about kids being mean

dd2 (6) has recently started wetting the bed at night. That was fine iykwim but today she wet herself at an after school club. There were a couple of kids from the same school there and now I'm terrified of her getting laughed at at school. She is such a sweet little girl and it breaks my heart to think of anyone being mean to her. Any advice? I'm trying to make out its normal and pretty common but I think I've gone too far and she's talking like she's going to talk about it openly tomorrow.

Do you know why she is doing it?

Greensleeves · 21/09/2010 19:43

six is still quite little IMO and lots of children that age will have the odd accident, especially if they are tired and have had a long day.

I'd be surprised if she is the only child in her class/the club who has had occasional wetting incidents.

No, she mentioned that she is scared to go to the loo at night so I've said to call fro me and I will take her. We have also tried waking her in the night to go to the loo with varied sucsess. It does seem like she is doing it in her sleep rather than choosing to pee the bed rather than go to the loo on her own. I'm worried now that its happened during the day... why would she be scared to go to the loo when its light?

I know Greensleeves, I'm not being particularly rational I'm just worried about kids being mean. I think the stats are something like 1 in 5.

Has there been any indication shes scared in the light? If not surely its more likely she just got involved in play, was tired and forgot she needed to go.

I'm pretty sure I was occasionally wetting myself up until I started at Junior school at 7. What I can really remember is being teased by my big sister for choosing frilly shocking pink knickers to wear home when the school changed me.

Could you suggest to her that once shes hung her coat etc at after school club it would be a good idea to pop to the toilet?

I will have a chat with her tomorrow. I think I'm over worrying as I regularly wet myself as a child (night and day) and I can't for the life of me remember what was wrong. Pants. (no pun intended)

My dd had daytime continence problems right up to Yr 6 and noone was ever mean to her. The teacher usually managed it very tactfully, there were spare knickers kept for her at school, but tbh even if the others had noticed, I am sure they would not have been nasty. Not all children are bullies, not all schools condone bullying.

My nine year old occassionally has a little wee in her knickers. She doesn't tend to not go all day at school and consequently is busting when she gets home. We have told her to make sure she goes whenever she needs to.
Maybe your DD is like mine and gets involved in 'stuff' to the exclusion of everything else?

Also they can be shy to ask the teacher to go to the loo (as a teacher I've seen teachers and TAs who make light of the need of DCs to go to the loo).
