6yr old ds bedwetting-goes through nappy-advice pls??

My nearly 6 and a half yr old ds is still in night time nappies which sometimes do their job but 2 or 3 nights a week they don't and he wets the bed. He has a completely dry nappy once or twice a week and every school holiday for a while I have tried various methods to get him out of the nappies but he doesn't seem ready. I've tried restricting drinks after tea, lifting - this works reasonably well but doesn't seem to be solving anything longterm.

Anyone else experienced similar? Is it time to go to the doctors? Can anyone recommend better night time nappies than Huggies DryNites?? He is quite a sensitive little boy and it would be really great for his self-exteem to get him out of nappies for good.

Please advise...

the only nappies that worked for my ds at that age were the lidl ones (which was good beacuse they are also quite cheap).

Mine became dry over about a month when he as a bit over 7 - nothing we did before that made any difference.

If you can just talk to him and explain that lots of boys in particular are 7 before they are dry that might at least help him feel better about it.

I think post 7 is the time to go to the gp - before that it is fairly common.

Have you considered using something reusable that looks less like a nappy? These sleep shorts should be more absorbent than disposables too: diurnetix.com/washable-briefs/girls/childrens-washable-bedtime-pants.html

thanks for the advice - reassurance appreciated. I have 2 dds who were dry from the age of 3 so this is all new to me! Will bide my time and check out other nappies.

maybe the nappy size is too big, or maybe when he puts the nappy on his 'bits' are sticking up rather than down so when he pees he doesnt actually pee into the nappy

have you tried a bedwetting system? Bascially when the child wets the special pants an alarm goes off, they however can be very expensive

Our six year old's bedwetting sounds much like your son's. We have noticed that on some nights, the bed is wet, but the absorbant bit of the pull-up pants is not. Our theory is that he is having erections during the night and this changes the position of his penis, so he is weeing towards the side bands of the pull-ups, where there is no absorbancy, so it just flows into the bed. After lifting, we have a routine of checking that he's put his penis back into the absorbancy pocket in the pull-ups - it does seem to have reduced the amount of "movement problems".

Also, just for peace of mind - our paediatrician has just assurred us that bedwetting at 6 is perfectly normal and that he is likely to grow out of this in his own time, probably in the next year or two.

Hope this helps!
