some children with reflux do this ime but I'm not sure if that applies to your DD as she seems to get something from it?

Maybe ignore her, I'll bet she stops when she doesn't get a reaction??

Just wanted to let you know that we're experiencing exactly the same thing - DD is now 13 months old. Personally, I think it's probably a combination of teething, exploring new things (i.e. I can do this, therefore I will!), and the fact that when you try to stop them doing something it becomes a game. DD is in stitches laughing whenever I try to pull her hand away - I've just resigned myself to the fact that she's either going to get bored and stop, or she'll actually make herself sick, which will probably mean she never does it again! Quite common around a year old, maybe because it usually gets a good reaction. It is very difficult for a parent to ignore!

My GD did this at that age and occasionally does it now she is two.

She went into hospital for observation and many tests as there were lots of things that it can be.

The specialist told us the most simple answer is thrush, as it itches the child tries to reach it in the throat.

The next possibility was acid reflux they treated her with an antacid but it made no difference.

She had a scan to check for something, I cant, remember what it was called, but basically it means the tubes are small and food causes a blockage and the child relieves it. It is fixed with a simple op.

In her case it just seemed to be a habit and we ignored an distracted her and it gradually improved, but it has taken a goood year. HTH

DD1 is 17 months, and has done it off an on for months now. It is just experimenting. It has no negative association for them at this age. We look at it and think "oh don't - you'll be sick", but they just think "mmm, interesting...."

My dd does it to, (15 months), she thinks its sooo funny.... have you noticed it's all girls doing it on this thread lol?

nowherewoman · 17/09/2010 20:29

My ds used to do it, I found the best way was to just say a low key " no don't do that please" or ignore it. He did it more if he got a big shouty reaction.
