pull ups at night still

Not too sure where to put this - my dd is nearly 5 and perfectly fine in every way developmentally etc, but she is still soaking at night - so still in pull ups. We're being very casula bout it and not making a fuss but to be honest, I'm a bit worried [sad[. My other two (one boy one girl) were dry at night by 2 and an half, so I'm getting a bit concerned. Should I be???

I think up until 7 its considered with normal ranges to still be wet at night.

how much does she have to drink before bed?

coolma · 11/09/2010 21:48

She has a mug of milk, and I try to get her to have w ee before bed..

I have heard it's best not to restirct fluid before bed. The theory being the bladder needs to be full to empty properly IYSWIM. My eldest only came out of pull ups when the size 6 were cutting in (nearly 6). We took them off and lifted her for a wee when we went to bed. She clicked almost straight away after being soaking the night before.

DD is 6 and in yr1, there are only 13 children in her class and having spoke to Mums on the playground at least 3 of them are still in Pull Ups at night.

I think it's best not too worry and see how things go.

dd 5 when we stopped the pull ups.
Last drink was 1/2 hr before bed,wee and teeth, and then when dh went to bed he would sleep walk her to the loo. we did that for about 2 mths and then one night forgot and she has been dry since then.
I wasnt stressed about it like choufleur said 7 is the max age when the hormone that slows down wee at night kicks in.

Thank you! I was trying to be very cool and relaxed about it, She sems to want to have a pull up on - in fact gets one out before bed for me to put on, so I guess I'll try to go with the flow as it were!!

Don't be worried, DS1 was 7.5 when he came out of pull pus, and still had occasional accidents until he was just 11. He's now 100% dry. I never said anything, but did ask him to tell me if his sheets needed changing, to make sure he had clean sheets.

All DC are different. Smile

My DS was 5 in June and still in pull-ups at night. He was dry for a while when he was 4 but then regressed. If he's still wet at 7, I might start asking for some professional help but until then I think it's better not to make a big issue of it.

MrsTayto · 13/09/2010 13:19

Dry at night at two and a half is VERY early. Your dd sounds absolutely fine - a hormone has to start being produced before the overnight production of urine is reduced. Until this happens there is no point in trying to night train. If she's very wet in the morning (and not from a recent wee but from lots when she's asleep) then the hormone hasn't started yet.

coolma · 13/09/2010 15:25

It's just that all her old nursery friends of the same age are dry at night. I know 2 and a half was really early for my other two - I have no idea how that happenened! I will, however, remain calm and see how it goes. She is still pretty wet in the mornings.

If it's any consulation my DS is 4.3YO and will only poo in his pull ups at night, he refuses point blak to use the toilet for it, most of his nursery friends are dry at night too so I was also a bit Blush but have since realised they really are all different.

My friend's DS was dry day and night at 3 but her eldest son was still in pullups at night until age 7!

Try not to worry and just go with it she will come out when she's ready :)

my Dd will be 5 in january and she still wears pull upsSmile

i tried to 'get her dry' at night and when it wasnt working i asked on here and was told you cant make a child be dry at night as it is hormonal. we decided to put DD back into pull ups and save our washing m,achine from wet sheet overloadSmile

dont worry about it she will be dry eventuallySmile

Have you ever had her checked out by a reputable chiro who is experienced with dealing with children?
I ask this because my cousin (who lives abroad so I can't recommend anyone in the UK) is qualified in this and I remember talking to her about how she helped a lot of children with bed wetting. This was before I had children so took less of a vested interest so my comments will be a little vague and not very technical. Hmm

I do remember her telling me that some children who struggle with bed wetting can have structural problems. Not that they or you as a parent could detect but e.g. something that presses when lying down on a muscle that weakens the 'need to wee' message that goes to the brain, and because it isn't strong enough the child doesn't wake up. I remember her saying she had had great success both with little bed wetters like your child (I say little in this does not seem to be that old for bed wetting) and older teenage bed wetters who had had problems for years.

Sorry, this was a bit long and might be too drastic (although treatment not painful obviously) for you to investigate.

pearlsandtwinset · 13/09/2010 15:49

I meant too drastic to investigate yet 5 being relatively common iyswim.

lamplighter · 13/09/2010 15:49

My niece is still in pull up's at 6 and she is now very embarrassed about it. I think my SIL should bite the bullet and try again.

vicki2010 · 13/09/2010 20:26

my son is nearly 9 and still wets!! we have had scans, measured urine amount, blood tests and tried medication (desmopressin) and still wets at night,he was potty trained during the day at 2yrs which was so easy but not the night time, they say his bladder isnt mature enough to respond to the medication and try again in six months!?? we'll keep trying......
