sorry, this may be boring, but i was so chuffed

he has quite bad speech delay, possibly due to hearing problems. he is almost 3 and this past week has been copying more and more words

this is the talk we had

ds2: dat
me: a cat?
ds2: back
me: in the back garden?
ds2: bets
me: the cat was in the garden with the rabbits
ds2: bwown
me: a brown cat
ds2: (with very, very long pauses between words)- dat....... bwown...dared.... bets......chase..... jump..... out

i was gobsmacked. he was actually attempting to put a sentence together for the first time ever. he was telling me that a brown cat was in the garden, the pets were scared in case the cat chased them but then the cat jumped out

(our rabbits are safely in a very cat-proof run btw!!!)

it was just so cute, and he was so pleased with himself when he realised i knew what he was saying. there's hope for him yet! Grin

How lovely! What a great feeling for you, and wonderful progress for your DS.

DS2 had huge speech delay and I well remember the stress and anxiety of that time. He's now a highly articulate seven year old. Smile

That's a really impressive effort on the part of your DS. Hope he continues to come on in leaps and bounds!

that is fantastic!! aww, it sounds like he is making progress, i guess it could be a leap as in a leap and a bound where some children seem to progress very slowly and then do lots all of a sudden. well done your ds.

thanks :)

i've been so worried about it and he'd been having awful tantrums when he couldn't get us to understand what he wanted
it's lovely to see him communicating at last

he's also been for cranial osteopathy while we wait for our next lot of hearing tests and SALT assessments... maybe that helped?

Aww, that's great. My ds2 had moderate speech delay and aged 3, I was the only one who was able to understand him (not even daddy !?!?). I also use cranial osteopathy, but was never sure if it really helped or he developed his speech anyway. We also went through the frustration period where he would talk with his fists so yto speak .... not good. Now a very gobby, but lovely, 7 year old that never shuts up, he's doing fine. Oh, how things change !! Grin

That's fantastic! You must be so proud! That's a really complex sentence to attempt for a first one too when you think that usually it's something to do with their wants or needs.

My DD was never diagnosed with a speech delay as such but she was definitely on the later end of the spectrum (just getting to grips with short sentences at 3) so I kind of get where you're coming from. 6 months later can't bloody shut her up Wink

mumbar · 12/09/2010 14:21

Grin thats brilliant - not only trying to use a sentance but he was really discriptive too.

Aitch · 12/09/2010 14:25

that is SO lovely, and it's not like he started witht he easy stuff, is it? that was practically a novel...

thisisyesterday · 12/09/2010 20:11

i know, i think he's been mulling all this talking stuff over for some time! getting it all straight in his head ready to tell us some stories lol

bizarrely he has only just learned to say milk too (woolk) and he has never said mummy or daddy lol

Grin that's great. i'm sure he has plenty to say when he is able to get it out. my DS had speech delay due to hearing probs and whenever he spoke we were just so excited! Soon you won't be able to stop him talking...
