Carrying lots of things around!

I have 25 month old twins - a boy and a girl.

The boy is ALWAYS - no matter where he goes - obsessed with carrying about ten things, even if it interferes with his ability to walk.

If we are going out in the car, he takes five minutes gathering this tractor, that car, this cuddly toy, that bus until he is piled up like a store display. Makes it very difficult to strap him into his seat in the car and I am FOREVER turning round whilst we are on the journey picking things up or he cries.

At bedtime he is the same - the toys vary (with some constants) - and he struggles like mad to climb the stairs but won't be carried or let me carry anything for him.

I understand this may well be an "object permanency" thing although thought they had grown out of that a long time ago, or worry that if he leaves something somewhere it won't be there when he comes back but his sister is nothing like this (and yes, yes I know I shouldn't compare!).

Anyone have any similar experiences or ideas how I can calm this down? If it's a passing phase I'll just live with it - it's not a huge problem, just baffling and sometimes very funny!

It's a phase. When DS was a toddler he couldn't go anywhere without at least one bus or train in each hand. DD was slightly easier as she liked filling bags with lots of little things and carrying them around. They'll grow out of it - but not before you have spend far too long searching for toys they have dropped in shops or along the way....

It' called a schema, and this one is called "transporter"! It's totally normal.

He needs a bag or something. Both mine did and do this, the only way to keep yourself sane is to get him some tote bags or lunchboxes--paperchase does some great small lunchboxes but anything he can manage will do.
