I feel that my DD doesnt get enough? she is grumpy througout the day & feel its from lack of sleep as she is a great eater.

she is awake btween 5.30 & 7.00 am everyday but will only sleep till 7 because i bring her in beside me when she wakes at 5.30am

she has about three 20 minuete naps throughout the day. She will not sleep any longer than this, i have tried various methods like cot, pram, my bed but still doesnt last any longer.

just wondering how long other babies her age nap for?

ds is just seven months and tbh normally sleeps more than you describe but sometimes not (these are not good days!) He is quite irregular and might have three nice half hour naps, spread throughout the day, or might just opt for one big nap of a couple of hours (i LOVE that). Often it depends partly on what we do. Eg if he falls asleep in the buggy when we walk the dog each morning that can often be the start of one nap. But if we go out in the car if might drift off just before we arrive, and of course, wake when we get out.

Every day is different but generally mine will have a 1.5 - 2 hour nap at some point and at least 40 mins at another time. Some days though its 20 minutes here and there and by the end of the day I'm shattered and so is she - so I empathise!

She will only sleep properly in her cot which is great unless you're out and about! I always put her back in her cot an hour and half - 2 hours after she wakes in the morning and 99% of the time she goes back to sleep. Usually she'll sleep again after lunch and now and then a short 20 min snooze at about 4pm if she's in the car at that point (I confess to contriving to be in the car at that point now and then!).

Don't think there are any right answers though as in my limited (7 months worth!) experience every baby is different and needs different amounts of sleep. If your little one is tired though its hard for her and hard for you but I guess you can only persevere. At least she is getting some sleep. One good piece of advice someone gave us was one yawn get ready 2 whisk them off to bed, 3 and you're hitting over-tired time and potentially a grumpy 2nd wind! Seemed to work for us although now we use eye and ear rubbing the same way. Others may have more useful tips- good luck!

Sounds just like mine. DS1 had a good though flexible routine and slept 45 mins, increasing to 1.5 hours twice a day at 7 months.

DS2 who is 6 months doesn't have a routine and his naps are short and unpredictable. I feel that if I could just give structure to his day, the length would increase. Sometimes we get into a rhythm and his sleep improves but going out in the car, which I have to do, puts him to sleep outside of the 2 hourly intervals and throws my attempts to establish a flexible routine.

Hi :-)

My 7 month old son sleeps 12 hours at night and it does vary but will roughly have three 30 minute naps during the day. He can be quite grumpy late afternoon but I have put this down to teething.

wow, i'm glad i read this post as i was worrying my 8 month old wasn't getting enough but he falls into at least two categories above!!

generally sleeps for 90 minutes 2.5-3 hours after waking then another 45 minute nap about 1pm, and another cat nap if i'm out in the car.

i remember my first son doing about the same and then i started to drag the first nap longer and longer until he began just one two-hour nap at about 1 years...it was a tough month dragging it forward but getting a longer lunchtime nap was ideal (and hopefully it will happen again as my 3 year old son still naps at lunch!!).

thanks
