Is it normal for babies to cry in their sleep?

Just heard DS (4mo) crying, but when I went to check him he was fast asleep- not the first time this has happened recently. Is this normal?? I wouldn't have thought enough bad things would have happened in his life thus far, or that he would have a sufficiently developed imagination, to be having nightmares yet...

DD does this, we'll hurtle up the stairs to soothe her only to see she's spark out. Might just be when they come to the end of a sleep cycle or something and start to wake up, have a moan and a wriggle and then drop off again.

My DC's both did this. Once I peeked at DS when he was grizzling, he did a big fart then went back to sleep again.

I told my HV that my little un seemed to be having nightmares when she was a few months old and she laughed at me Confused but I still swear that she did!

Thanks all- glad it's not just us, then! Smile

My little boy did this from as early as I could remeber and still does now (21months). I still run up the stairs to check him haha. You will get use to it thought. I personally think he is dreaming in some way and even did when he was little.

In my experience only when they have a pain or are coming down with something

geraldinetheluckygoat · 04/09/2010 22:51

mine both did this. DS1 more than ds2, but ds1 was a particularly miserable baby Grin Grin

My DD does this too (8mo). She also smiles in her sleep but of course you don't hear that. Nothing to worry about.

ds2 did this from about 4-5 months old. It did get worse when he was around 1 year (we put it down to the whole separation anxiety thing) and he did have a few night terrors which were awful for us but he was totally unaware of them. He's about to turn 3 and hasn't had any in over 6 months

we had to see a consultant with him about something completely unrelated and she said it was perfectly normal and unless it was disrupting our sleep Confused or he was waking up distressed, we shouldn't worry about it

he talks in his sleep sometimes now, quite funny to listen to Smile

my ds did this from earlier than four months...maybe as young as one? And i felt exactly like you op ... "oh no! I've f*ed him up already! Shock Sad " like you said they have so few experiences to draw on at that age i couldn't help but, for one irrational moment, feel it was my fault! Pfb! He still does it a bit but i'm no longer hung up on it Grin like bobby says they do smile too.
